Amsterdam’s “coffee shops” are licensed cannabis venues. Under the Netherlands’ gedoogbeleid (tolerance policy), they’re allowed to sell up to 5 grams per person; you must be 18+ with a valid ID. Traditional cafés sell coffee and beer but no cannabis.

Rules & Etiquette

  • Bring cash and a valid ID.
  • Stay within the 5-gram limit.
  • Purchase something and don’t photograph patrons without permission.
  • Consume on site; avoid smoking in public or while cycling.
  • Respect house rules and staff.

Look for clear menus, good ventilation, comfortable seating and friendly budtenders. Venues in Jordaan and De Pijp tend to be quieter; those near the Red Light District can be rowdier.

Tips

Start slow with low-THC strains, hydrate and avoid mixing weed with alcohol. Plan a safe route home and be mindful of locals.
