Yes, Gotogate is a legitimate online travel agency, not a scam. It is a booking brand of Etraveli Group, a Swedish company that has been selling flights for more than two decades, and the tickets it issues are real tickets on real airlines. The problem is not whether your booking exists. It is what happens when something goes wrong: Gotogate holds the booking, charges its own per-passenger service fee to touch it, and sits between you and the airline. EU consumer authorities took that seriously enough that in 2023 they required Etraveli to commit to passing airline refunds through within seven days, and to stop burying what its paid service packages actually do.
This review covers what Gotogate is, what regulators have actually found, why its review scores contradict each other, the complaints that come up most, and the exact steps that get a stuck refund moving. Where a figure could not be confirmed from a primary source, it is left out rather than guessed at.
Is Gotogate legit or a scam?

Gotogate is a real, established flight retailer, so the scam framing is wrong. The accurate warning is narrower: it is an intermediary, and intermediaries add a layer between you and the airline that costs money and time when plans change.
Three facts settle the legitimacy question. Gotogate is operated by Etraveli Group, a named Swedish corporate group with public financials, not an anonymous storefront. It is large enough that the European Commission named it directly in a consumer-protection enforcement action, which is not something a fake site gets invited to. And in 2023 the Commission blocked a $1.8 billion attempt by Booking Holdings to buy it, a level of scrutiny reserved for genuine market participants.
What people are really asking when they type “is Gotogate legit” is whether they will get their money back if the trip falls apart. That is a fair question, and the honest answer is in the refund section below.
Who owns Gotogate?
Gotogate is owned by Etraveli Group, a Swedish flight-booking company that also runs Mytrip, Flight Network, seat24, Supersaver, Flybillet and Travelstart. These are storefronts on shared infrastructure, not competing companies.
That matters more than it sounds. Travelers who get burned on one of these sites routinely rebook on another, believing they have switched providers. The European Commission’s own enforcement page lists the brands together under one company, because the practices being investigated were the company’s, not the storefront’s.
| Etraveli Group brand | Where you usually meet it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Gotogate | Metasearch results in the US, UK, Nordics, India, Brazil and more | The flagship flight storefront |
| Mytrip | Google Flights and Skyscanner results, mainly Europe | Same platform, different skin |
| Flight Network | Canada and Australia | Same group; see our Flight Network review |
| seat24 / Supersaver / Flybillet | Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland | Nordic-market brands |
| Travelstart | South Africa and wider Africa | Regional brand |
Ownership of the parent group has been contested. Booking Holdings agreed in 2021 to buy Etraveli for roughly $1.8 billion, the European Commission prohibited the deal on 25 September 2023, and Booking appealed to the EU General Court, which heard the case in July 2025. Etraveli has continued to operate independently throughout.
What country is Gotogate based in?
Gotogate is Swedish. Its parent, Etraveli Group, is headquartered in Uppsala, Sweden, and the US-facing business runs through GoToGate Inc., which holds a Better Business Bureau profile registered in Miami, Florida. There is also a listed office in Oslo, Norway.
The practical consequence: which consumer-protection regime covers you depends on which storefront you booked through and where your flight departs. A booking on the US site involves a Florida-registered entity and US Department of Transportation rules for ticket agents. A booking on a European storefront brings EU passenger-rights law and the EU consumer-protection cooperation network into play, which is where the strongest commitments live.
What have regulators actually found about Gotogate?
Etraveli Group, Gotogate’s owner, was one of three online travel agencies that had to give the European Commission and national consumer authorities binding commitments on refunds and transparency, implemented by 30 June 2023. This is the single most useful thing to know before booking, and almost no Gotogate review mentions it.
The action was run by the EU Consumer Protection Cooperation network and led by the Swedish Consumer Agency. It followed a 2021 investigation into how airlines handled pandemic cancellations, which turned a spotlight on the intermediaries sitting in the middle. Etraveli, eDreams ODIGEO and Kiwi.com were the three named. Under the commitments, published on the European Commission’s air travel enforcement page, the agencies agreed to:
- transfer a refund to the customer within 7 days of receiving it from the airline;
- clear any remaining refund backlogs by 30 June 2023;
- publish a telephone number and an e-mail address in the support or contact section of their sites, rather than a contact form only;
- make the benefits of each paid service package clearer;
- tell customers plainly about their statutory right to rerouting or reimbursement when an airline cancels, and tell them when a flight has been cancelled;
- warn customers where the agency’s own services affect their rights, including that contact details may not have been passed to the airline, and that if one leg of a journey is cancelled the other leg may still have to be paid for when the flights are not interlinked.
That last bullet is the regulator describing, in its own words, the two failure modes that generate most of the angry reviews. In July 2025 the Commission added Expedia and Lastminute.com to the same set of commitments.
Separately, Italy’s competition and consumer authority AGCM closed an assessment of six online travel agencies in December 2017, Gotogate among them, with sanctions totalling more than 4 million euros for unfair commercial practices around price transparency and card surcharges.
What this record does not show is fraud. There is no finding that Gotogate takes money without issuing tickets, and no publicly reported Gotogate data breach turned up in this research. The pattern regulators went after is narrower and more mundane: slow money, unclear packages, and poor communication when a flight changes.
Why do Gotogate’s review scores contradict each other?

Because “Gotogate” is not one review profile. It is dozens of country storefronts, each with its own reviews, plus complaint sites that only ever hear from people with a problem. A searcher who lands on one number and a searcher who lands on another are both reading real data about the same company.
Two structural forces pull the numbers apart. Review platforms that let a company invite customers after a smooth transaction collect a broad sample that includes the many bookings that went fine. Complaint platforms have no invite mechanism at all, so their sample is close to 100% problems. Neither is lying; they are measuring different populations.
| Where you look | What it shows (checked July 2026) | What that actually tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot, US storefront (flights-us.gotogate.com) | Labelled “Average”, 3.4 / 5 | Invite-driven sample, US bookings only |
| Trustpilot, Brazil storefront (gotogate.com.br) | Labelled “Average”, 3.7 / 5 | Same brand, different market, different score |
| Trustpilot, Denmark storefront | Around 2.5 / 5 | Shows how far the spread goes by country |
| SmartCustomer | 3.7 / 5 from 3,117 reviews | Mid-range aggregate |
| ProductReview.com.au | 1.2 / 5 from 1,775 reviews | Australia’s largest opinion site; a hard signal |
| PissedConsumer (Gotogate USA) | 1.4 / 5 from 1,006 reviews | Complaint-only channel; read for failure modes |
| Better Business Bureau | Profile exists for GoToGate Inc., Miami, FL | Check the current grade and complaint log yourself |
Read the spread this way: bookings that need no intervention usually go fine, which is why invite-driven scores sit in the threes. Bookings that need intervention go badly often enough to produce 1.2 and 1.4 averages on the sites where people go when they are stuck. Your risk is therefore not average, it is conditional. It depends entirely on whether your itinerary changes.
What are the most common Gotogate complaints?

Five complaints repeat across every complaint platform: slow refunds, paid seat selection that never reached the airline, a service fee charged even when the airline would have acted for free, unreachable customer support, and add-ons that did not do what the buyer assumed. Each has a specific defence.
| Complaint | What is actually happening | How to protect yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Refund never arrives | The airline pays the agency, and the money then waits in the agency’s queue | Ask in writing for the date the airline released the refund, then count 7 days from that date |
| Paid to select seats, no seats at check-in | The request was taken at checkout but not confirmed with the airline | Log in on the airline’s own site with the airline reference within 24 hours and confirm the seats exist |
| Service fee on a free cancellation | The agency’s own per-passenger fee is separate from the airline’s fare rules | Read the change and cancellation fee before paying; if the airline allows free cancellation, that does not waive the agency fee |
| Cannot reach customer support | Contact routed through forms and a call center queue | The 2023 EU commitments require a published phone number and e-mail address in the support section; use both and keep timestamps |
| “Flexible ticket” did not allow a change | The add-on covers the agency’s handling, not the airline’s fare rules | Check the airline’s fare conditions for your ticket number before buying flexibility from the agency |
| One leg cancelled, other leg still charged | Separately ticketed flights with no interline protection | Confirm whether your legs are on one ticket; if not, a missed connection is your cost |
One habit prevents most of these: within 24 hours of booking, take the airline reference number from your confirmation e-mail, open the airline’s own site, and pull up the reservation there. If the airline can see your booking, your baggage allowance and your seats, the ticket is real and properly issued. If it cannot, you have a problem while it is still cheap to fix. Our guide on how to tell whether a travel agency is legit walks through the same check in more detail.

Not hidden, but easy to miss and easy to accept by accident. Gotogate’s own help pages describe a service fee charged per passenger to handle communication with the airline on any change or cancellation, which varies by request type and market and sits on top of whatever the airline charges. Optional extras such as seat selection, baggage, and support or flexibility packages are presented during checkout, and the default path through the funnel adds them rather than skipping them.
Exact fee amounts differ by country storefront and change without notice, so the number on your booking is the only one that matters. No figure is quoted here that could not be confirmed against Gotogate’s published terms for your market. What you can rely on is the structure: a low headline fare, extras sold back afterwards, and an agency fee to touch the booking later.
That structure is also the honest answer to why Gotogate looks cheaper than the airline. It sells the bare seat. Add a checked bag, a seat assignment and any flexibility, and the gap against booking the actual airline directly often closes or reverses. Compare the final payment total, not the price in the search results.
How long should a Gotogate refund take?

For an EU flight the airline cancelled, the maximum is 14 days: EU law gives the airline 7 days to refund, and Etraveli’s 2023 commitment to the European Commission gives Gotogate a further 7 days to pass the money on. That number is the most useful sentence in this review, because it converts an open-ended wait into a deadline you can quote back.
The mechanics matter. Under Regulation 261/2004 the airline owes reimbursement within seven days once you have chosen a refund over rerouting. When the ticket was bought through an intermediary, the airline pays the intermediary, not you. The 2023 commitment closes that gap by requiring the transfer to reach you within seven days of the agency receiving it. Fourteen days total, worst case.
For a US itinerary, the reference point is different. When an airline cancels or significantly changes a flight and you do not accept the alternative, Department of Transportation rules require the refund to be issued within seven business days on a credit card and 20 calendar days on other payment methods, and those rules bind ticket agents, not just airlines.
A voluntary cancellation is a different animal entirely. Then you are governed by the airline’s fare rules plus Gotogate’s own service fee, and a non-refundable fare stays non-refundable no matter who sold it.
What can you do if Gotogate will not refund you?
Go around the agency. Airlines committed in 2021 that a passenger who booked through an intermediary and cannot get reimbursed by that intermediary may ask the airline for a direct refund. This escape hatch exists in writing on the European Commission’s own enforcement page, and hardly anyone stuck in a Gotogate refund queue knows about it.
Work through these in order, keeping every message and timestamp:
- Put the request in writing to Gotogate using the published e-mail address, with your booking reference and ticket number, and state that you want money back rather than a credit or voucher.
- Ask the airline directly whether it has already released the refund and on what date. That single answer tells you whether the delay is the carrier’s or the agency’s.
- Request a direct refund from the airline under the 2021 commitments if the agency has not paid. Airlines were asked to publish the conditions for this on their own sites.
- Open a card chargeback for services not rendered, before your card network’s time limit expires. Include the written refund request and the airline’s confirmation.
- Escalate to a regulator or dispute body. In the EU, your national consumer authority or an alternative dispute resolution board; Sweden’s board handles cases against Swedish traders. In the US, file an aviation consumer complaint with the Department of Transportation, which has jurisdiction over ticket agents.
Does the 24-hour free cancellation rule cover a Gotogate booking?
No. The US 24-hour rule applies to airlines, not to tickets bought through an online travel agency, so it does not cover a Gotogate booking. The Department of Transportation says agents are free to offer something similar, but they are not required to.
This is the structural reason agency checkouts sell flexibility as a paid extra: the protection travelers assume they already have does not reach the intermediary, so it gets sold back. Knowing that reframes the add-on from a rip-off into a priced substitute, which is fairer to Gotogate and more useful to you. If a free 24-hour window matters, book on the airline’s own site, where the rule applies by law.
Is Gotogate IATA accredited?
Treat any claim about a specific agency’s IATA status as unverified unless you check it yourself. IATA accreditation is the arrangement that lets an agency issue tickets on airline stock and settle through the industry’s billing system, and IATA operates a public agent check for exactly this purpose. This review does not assert a status for Gotogate because none could be confirmed from a primary source.
For a traveler, the accreditation question is also the wrong test. A ticket is valid when the airline holds it, whatever badge sits on the seller’s footer. Look up the reservation on the airline’s site using the airline reference and confirm the ticket number is issued. That check settles in two minutes what a credential search cannot settle at all.
Is Gotogate cheaper than booking the airline directly?

Sometimes on the headline fare, rarely on the total, and never on aftercare. Agencies like Gotogate buy inventory in volume and will combine two carriers with no partnership into a routing no single airline sells, which genuinely produces fares the airline cannot match. Then extras and the agency’s own fees narrow the gap.
| Where you book | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Gotogate (or a sibling brand) | Unusual multi-carrier routings and genuinely low bare fares | Agency service fee on changes; no 24-hour rule; refunds pass through the agency |
| The airline directly | Anything you might need to change; loyalty credit; check-in problems | Often a higher headline fare |
| Metasearch (Momondo, Skyscanner, Google Flights) | Finding the cheapest seller, then deciding where to buy | The cheapest result is usually an agency, not the airline |
| Other agencies (Kiwi.com, Agoda, Expedia) | Comparing agency fee structures against each other | Kiwi.com was in the same 2023 EU commitments; Expedia signed up in 2025 |
A useful rule: use metasearch to find the price, then buy from the airline if the difference is small enough to be worth the aftercare. If you want to compare agency options first, see our Gotogate alternatives round-up, and our reviews of FlightHub and Way.com for how other intermediaries compare on fees and complaints.
Who should not book with Gotogate?
Anyone whose itinerary is likely to move. The complaint record is overwhelmingly about changes, cancellations and refunds, not about tickets that failed to exist, so the risk falls almost entirely on travelers who need to alter a booking.
- Anyone with dates that might shift – work travel, family situations, unconfirmed leave. Every change runs through the agency and costs an agency fee.
- Anyone flying a tight self-transfer where the legs are separately ticketed. If leg one is cancelled, leg two is still your problem.
- Anyone who needs special assistance, a specific seat, or unusual baggage. These requests have to survive a hand-off to the airline, and that hand-off is where they get lost.
- Anyone booking within 48 hours of departure. There is no time to fix a problem through a support queue.
- Anyone chasing airline status or upgrades. Agency-issued deep-discount fares often earn reduced or no credit.
Conversely, a one-way, hand-baggage-only, fixed-date trip on a fare noticeably below the airline’s own is close to the best case for an agency booking, because none of the failure modes above can trigger.
Verdict: should you book with Gotogate?
Book with Gotogate only when the saving is real after extras and your plans are genuinely fixed. Book the airline if there is any chance you will need to change something. It is a legitimate seller with a poor aftercare record, and the price of the cheap fare is paid later, in service, if anything goes wrong.
If you do book, do three things in the first 24 hours: confirm the reservation on the airline’s own site with the airline reference, screenshot the full checkout total and every add-on you accepted, and note the agency’s published phone number and e-mail address from the support section. Those three artifacts are what turn a refund dispute from an argument into a paperwork exercise.

Gotogate FAQ
Is Gotogate a valid website?
Yes. Gotogate is a real flight-booking site operated by Etraveli Group of Uppsala, Sweden, with a US entity, GoToGate Inc., holding a Better Business Bureau profile in Miami, Florida. Tickets bought through it are issued on real airlines. The risk is not a fake storefront, it is slow refunds and per-passenger service fees when a booking has to change.
What country is Gotogate from?
Sweden. Its parent company Etraveli Group is headquartered in Uppsala, and the group also runs Mytrip, Flight Network, seat24, Supersaver, Flybillet and Travelstart. The US-facing business operates through GoToGate Inc., registered in Miami, Florida, and there is a listed office in Oslo, Norway.
Can I get a refund from Gotogate?
Yes, but the money travels through the agency. If an airline cancels an EU flight, EU law gives the airline seven days to reimburse, and Etraveli’s 2023 commitment to the European Commission gives Gotogate seven more days to pass it on, so 14 days is the worst case. For US itineraries, Department of Transportation rules require refunds within seven business days on a credit card and 20 calendar days on other payment methods, and those rules bind ticket agents as well as airlines.
What can I do if Gotogate will not pay my refund?
Ask the airline whether it has already released the money and on what date. Airlines committed in 2021 that passengers who booked through an intermediary and cannot get reimbursed by it may request a refund directly from the airline. If that fails, open a card chargeback before your network’s deadline, then escalate to your national consumer authority or, in the US, file an aviation consumer complaint with the Department of Transportation.
Does the 24-hour free cancellation rule apply to Gotogate?
No. The US 24-hour refund rule applies to airlines, not to tickets bought through an online travel agency, so it does not cover a Gotogate booking. Agents may choose to offer something similar but are not required to, which is why flexibility is sold as a paid add-on at checkout. If a free 24-hour window matters, book on the airline’s own site.
Why are flights cheaper on Gotogate than with the actual airline?
Partly for legitimate reasons and partly by unbundling. The agency buys inventory in volume and will combine carriers that have no partnership into a routing no single airline sells. It also displays the bare seat, then sells baggage, seat selection and flexibility back to you during checkout, and charges its own service fee to change anything later. Compare the final payment total against the airline’s own site, not the search-results price.
Are Gotogate and Mytrip the same company?
Effectively yes. Both are storefronts of Etraveli Group running on shared booking infrastructure, alongside Flight Network, seat24, Supersaver, Flybillet and Travelstart. The European Commission listed them together in its 2023 coordinated action, so rebooking on a sibling brand after a bad Gotogate experience does not change the company you are dealing with.
