Is Atlanta Safe for Tourists? What the 2026 Police Data Shows

People at the Truist Park, Battery Avenue Southeast, Atlanta, GA, USA

Last modified August 27, 2026

Atlanta is safe for visitors in the areas visitors actually use, and the 2026 police data says so more clearly than any year since the pandemic. Through 8 August 2026, the Atlanta Police Department recorded 10,732 Group A crimes citywide against 12,487 in the same period last year, a 14% drop. Property crime fell 19% and thefts from parked cars fell 33%. The caveat is real and specific: aggravated assault rose 16%, and it now accounts for roughly 95% of all violent crime reported in the city. So the risk that touches a tourist is going down, while the risk that mostly touches people in disputes with people they know is going up. Those are two different Atlantas inside one police report.

Is Atlanta safe for tourists in 2026?

Yes, with the ordinary caution any large American city asks for. The three police zones that contain almost every Atlanta attraction, hotel district and restaurant strip are all down double digits this year, and the crime category most likely to affect a visitor, theft from a parked vehicle, is down 33% citywide.

What has not improved is aggravated assault, which is up 16% year to date. This is where most safety guides either panic or wave it away, so here is the honest read: aggravated assault in Atlanta is overwhelmingly concentrated in the zones with the fewest visitor destinations, and the eastside zone that does contain visitor destinations, Zone 6, is the one where it is climbing fastest. That is a reason to be deliberate about where you walk after midnight in East Atlanta and Edgewood, not a reason to skip the city.

If you have read our guides to safety in Munich or the most dangerous places in France, the method here is the same: police statistics first, reputation second.

What do Atlanta’s 2026 crime numbers actually say?

Overall crime in Atlanta is down 14% in 2026, driven almost entirely by a 19% fall in property crime, while violent crime is up 15% almost entirely because of aggravated assault. Both of those sentences come from the same page of the same police report, which is why news coverage of Atlanta crime can look contradictory depending on which number a headline picks.

Two things in that table matter more than the headline percentage.

  • Theft from a motor vehicle is the single most common crime in Atlanta. At 2,575 reports it outranks every other category in the report, including all other larceny at 2,271. Breaking into parked cars is what crime in Atlanta mostly is.
  • Aggravated assault is 95% of violent crime. Of 2,223 person crimes, 2,104 are aggravated assaults. Homicide, rape and robbery combined make up the remaining 456 reports across a city of half a million people over more than seven months.

Which parts of Atlanta are safest for visitors?

Buckhead and the Downtown-Midtown corridor are the safest parts of Atlanta for visitors, and the police data is unusually clear about it. The Atlanta Police Department divides the city into six patrol zones plus a separate airport precinct, and publishes crime figures for each one. Almost every hotel, museum, stadium and restaurant district a visitor uses sits in Zone 5, Zone 2 or Zone 6.

Most lists of the safest neighborhoods in Atlanta rank places by feel, school ratings or house prices. This one ranks them by the police department’s own counts. The two are not always the same: Buckhead earns its reputation for low crime rates on the numbers, while Midtown Atlanta scores better than its reputation and the eastside scores worse than its charm suggests.

APD Cobra Report by zone, Week 32 ending 8 August 2026. Zone homicides sum to the citywide total of 53. Not sure which zone an address is in? APD publishes a Find My Zone lookup.

Read that table by column rather than by row and the pattern is hard to miss. The three zones a visitor spends time in hold 14 of the city’s 53 homicides between them, roughly a quarter, and two of those three are Zone 5 and Zone 2 with five and two. Zone 1 alone, which almost no tourist has a reason to enter, accounts for 17.

Where car break-ins actually happen

Zones 5, 6 and 2 recorded 670, 586 and 385 thefts from vehicles respectively, which is 1,641 of the city’s 2,575, or roughly 64%. That is the one crime statistic where being in a visitor area makes you more exposed, not less, for the obvious reason: rental cars full of luggage park where the attractions are. It is also falling fast. Zone 5 cut vehicle break-ins 48% year on year, the steepest decline in any category in any zone.

Is downtown Atlanta safe at night?

Downtown Atlanta is safe at night on the main lit corridors and around events, and Zone 5’s crime is down 24% this year, the largest fall of any zone. The blocks between Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia Aquarium, State Farm Arena and Mercedes-Benz Stadium are heavily patrolled, camera-covered and busy whenever anything is on.

The practical caution is not about violence, it is about emptiness. Downtown Atlanta’s population thins out sharply after office hours in the blocks away from the venues, so a street that felt normal at 6pm can be deserted at 11pm. The rule that works: walk on Peachtree Street, Marietta Street, Andrew Young International Boulevard and the park perimeter rather than cutting through side streets and surface parking lots, and take a rideshare for anything over about ten blocks after midnight.

Is Buckhead safe?

Buckhead is the lowest-violence part of Atlanta by a wide margin. Zone 2 recorded two homicides in the first 32 weeks of 2026, against a citywide 53, and its aggravated assault count of 116 is the lowest of the six city zones. Overall crime there is down 18%.

Buckhead’s crime profile is a retail profile. It logged 443 shoplifting reports, the highest of any zone, which is what happens when a district contains Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza. Vehicle break-ins at 385 are down 31%. If you are choosing a base for a first visit and want the shortest possible safety conversation, this is it, at the cost of being a 15-minute train ride from most of what you came to see. Guided tours and experiences in Buckhead run year-round.

Is the eastside safe? Little Five Points, Inman Park and the BeltLine

Zone 6 is safe to walk, eat and shop in, and it is also the one visitor-facing part of Atlanta where violence is moving the wrong way. Overall crime is down 12%, but aggravated assault rose 42% year on year, from 195 reports to 276. That is the steepest rise in the city, ahead of even Zone 3.

This zone covers most of the walkable Atlanta that people come for: Little Five Points, Inman Park, the Old Fourth Ward, Cabbagetown, Candler Park, Virginia-Highland, Kirkwood and the Eastside Trail of the BeltLine. Seven homicides year to date across all of it. The realistic reading is that the daytime and evening experience is unchanged and pleasant, and that late-night incidents in the bar clusters of East Atlanta Village and Edgewood Avenue are what is driving the assault number. Treat Edgewood Avenue after 1am the way you would treat any dense bar strip in any American city.

What parts of Atlanta should visitors avoid?

ibuki Tsubo / Unsplash

There is no Atlanta neighborhood a visitor needs to avoid in daylight, and there are several that have no visitor reason to be entered at night: Vine City, English Avenue, Bankhead and the residential stretches of southwest and southeast Atlanta. This is a statement about where crime concentrates, not about the people who live there, and it is worth being precise.

Zone 1, which covers Vine City, English Avenue and Bankhead, recorded 588 aggravated assaults and 17 homicides year to date, the highest counts in the city. Zone 3, covering southeast Atlanta, is the only zone where overall crime is rising, up 8%, with aggravated assault up 41%. Both zones are nonetheless improving on property crime, Zone 1 by 29% and Zone 3 by 1%.

Some of these areas are directly adjacent to places visitors do go. Vine City station is two stops from Five Points and sits beside Mercedes-Benz Stadium. On a match day the streets around it are full of police and people; at 2am on a Tuesday they are not. The distinction that matters in Atlanta is almost always time of day and street density, not neighborhood name.

Is MARTA safe?

MARTA rail train at an Atlanta station platform
Train-museum.org

MARTA is safe for visitors and measures itself against a public benchmark most transit systems do not publish. The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority runs the rail network, the bus network and the Atlanta Streetcar, and it is the public transportation a visitor will actually use. MARTA’s own published Key Performance Indicator recorded 2.72 Part I crimes per million unlinked passenger boardings in May 2026, against an internal ceiling of 4.15. Part I here means the eight serious offence types: homicide, forcible rape, aggravated assault, robbery, larceny, motor vehicle theft, burglary and arson.

The honest other half: in June 2026 the Federal Transit Administration opened a safety review of MARTA following an audit of assaults on transit workers, and a run of stabbings earlier that month put the system back in local headlines. MARTA’s response to the federal regulator was that its crime-prevention strategy is working and the numbers above are its evidence. Both things are on the record and a visitor is entitled to see both.

Practically, the parts that matter to a traveller are unchanged. The Red and Gold lines run from inside the airport terminal to Downtown and Midtown for a flat $2.50, which is the single best value in Atlanta and removes the rental-car break-in risk entirely. The Better Breeze system now accepts a contactless card or phone tapped straight at the gate, so you no longer need to buy a physical Breeze card. Ride in the front carriage or a busy one late at night, which is the same advice that applies on any metro in the world. Our solo travel safety tips cover the general version.

Is Hartsfield-Jackson airport safe?

Hartsfield-Jackson is statistically the safest place in Atlanta, and it is not close. APD’s airport precinct recorded 286 crimes of all kinds year to date against 496 last year, a 42% fall, and within that: zero homicides, zero burglaries and a single robbery across more than seven months at the world’s busiest passenger airport.

The composition is more useful than the total. Of those 286 reports, 198 are classified as “all other larceny”, which at an airport overwhelmingly means bags, laptops, phones and personal items taken from carts, gate areas and baggage claim. Another 41 are vehicle thefts and 24 are break-ins from the parking decks. Aggravated assaults numbered six.

So the airport risk model is simple: nothing is going to happen to you, and something might happen to your bag. Do not put a laptop bag on the floor beside you at a gate, and if you are leaving a car in the decks for a week, leave nothing visible in it. A basic set of travel security products handles most of this.

Do Georgia’s gun laws affect visitors?

Yes, and this is the question international visitors ask that almost no Atlanta travel guide answers. Georgia has been a permitless carry state since 12 April 2022. An eligible adult may carry a handgun in public without any permit, that rule applies to out-of-state visitors as well as residents, and Georgia recognizes carry permits issued by every other state.

In practice this changes nothing about your day. It does mean that the legal baseline in Georgia is different from most of Europe, Asia and Latin America, and it is worth knowing rather than discovering. Local governments in Georgia generally cannot set carry rules stricter than the state’s, so Atlanta does not have its own separate regime.

How does Atlanta handle World Cup crowds and big events?

Atlanta Police Department officers on duty in the city
Atlanta Police / x.com

Atlanta hosted eight FIFA World Cup 26 matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, including a semifinal, under a unified command that put the Atlanta Police Department alongside the FBI, Homeland Security, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Georgia State Patrol. The group-stage matches fell on 15, 18, 21, 24 and 27 June, with a round of 32 on 1 July, a round of 16 on 7 July and the semifinal on 15 July.

Two pieces of that apparatus are permanent and useful to any visitor, not just a match-goer:

  • Atlanta’s E-911 center has real-time language detection and translation. You can call or text 911 in your own language and be understood. City employees also have free translation through the city’s iSpeak ATL service if you need to speak to an officer in person.
  • Non-emergency incidents can be reported online. APD runs a web portal for reports that do not need an officer dispatched, which is the right route for a car break-in or a stolen bag when you are short on time before a flight.

Federal agents also confiscated 76 drones from restricted airspace over downtown Atlanta during the tournament period, which is a useful reminder that temporary flight restrictions apply around major events. Leave the drone at the hotel.

Atlanta runs this playbook several times a year for Falcons and Atlanta United fixtures, Peach Bowl, Dragon Con and Music Midtown. On event days the visitor areas are the most heavily policed streets in the southeast. The crowd risk in Atlanta is pickpocketing and vehicle break-ins around the venues, not violence inside them.

What crime is most likely to happen to you in Atlanta?

A break-in to your parked rental car, by a wide margin. It is the largest single crime category in the entire police report at 2,575 incidents, and roughly 64% of them happen in the three zones visitors use. Everything else on the list is rarer by an order of magnitude.

Is Atlanta a safe place to live?

That is a different question from visitor safety and the answer depends almost entirely on which of Atlanta’s six police zones you would be living in. A visitor spends three days inside Zones 5, 2 and 6 and sees a city where crime is down 12% to 24%. A resident lives at one address, in one beat, and the spread between Zone 2 with two homicides and Zone 1 with 17 is the whole story.

If you are moving to Atlanta rather than visiting, use the APD crime mapping tools at address level rather than any citywide figure, and look at the surrounding metro too. Decatur, Brookhaven and the DeKalb and Gwinnett suburbs are separate jurisdictions with their own local police departments and are not in these numbers at all, which is the most common mistake people make when reading Atlanta crime data. The city of Atlanta is a fraction of metro Atlanta.

Atlanta’s violent crime rate has historically run higher than the national average, which is the single line most relocation guides quote and then stop. Neighborhood safety here is a block-level question, and the things people actually weigh alongside it, affordability, green spaces, highly rated schools and whether a street is walkable to anything, vary just as sharply between beats. Virginia-Highland, Candler Park and Druid Hills draw families and young professionals for that combination; Midtown Atlanta and West Midtown draw people who want to be near Georgia Tech, Georgia State University and the Atlanta BeltLine.

How to stay safe in Atlanta

Five habits cover almost all of the realistic risk, and four of them are about your car and your bag rather than about you. Atlanta public safety for a visitor is a property-crime problem wearing a violent-crime reputation.

  • Leave nothing visible in your car. Not a bag, not a jacket, not a cable. This one habit addresses the single most common crime in the city.
  • Use public transportation instead of parking downtown. Rail runs from inside the airport to Georgia State University, the Georgia World Congress Center and Midtown Atlanta, all under camera surveillance, for the price of a coffee.
  • Stay on well-lit main streets after dark. Atlanta is a poor pedestrian city in the gaps between districts, and the gaps are where people feel exposed.
  • Be aware of your surroundings at station entrances and ATMs. The standard advice, and the standard advice is standard because it works.
  • Book hotels with a staffed deck or valet. Many Atlanta hotels run off-duty officers on site, and a staffed deck is worth more than any in-room safe.

Report anything that does happen. Atlanta police run an online portal for non-emergency reports, and a report number is what your insurer and your rental company will ask for first.

Mistakes visitors make in Atlanta

  • Renting a car for a downtown-only trip. It adds the city’s most common crime to your itinerary and costs more than MARTA.
  • Reading a metro-wide or FBI Uniform Crime Reporting figure as if it described the blocks around their hotel. Atlanta’s per-zone spread is larger than the gap between many entire cities.
  • Assuming Downtown is dangerous and Midtown is not. They are the same police zone, and it is the zone with the biggest improvement in the city.
  • Walking the last mile home at 2am because the rideshare surge looked steep. This is the single decision that turns a good night into an incident report.
  • Trusting a commercial crime-score website over the police department that publishes the underlying data free every week.

Where the numbers come from, and what we left out

Every crime figure on this page comes from the Atlanta Police Department’s own Cobra Report for Week 32, ending 8 August 2026, published on the APD Crime Statistics page. It is a weekly count of Group A offences, citywide and by zone, comparing the year to date against the same period a year earlier. We have quoted APD’s own percentage changes rather than recalculating them. The zone homicide counts add to 53, matching the citywide figure, which is a useful internal check on any crime table.

Three things we deliberately did not publish:

  • A crime rate per 100,000 residents. That requires a current city population figure, and small differences in which population estimate you use move the rate enough to change the conclusion. Raw counts with a like-for-like comparison are more honest.
  • A ranking of Atlanta against other US cities. Those rankings usually compare cities with wildly different municipal boundaries. Atlanta’s city limits hold a small share of the metro population, which flatters or damns it depending on the list.
  • Neighborhood-level counts below zone level. APD publishes beat-level data, but a single incident moves a small beat’s percentage by triple digits and that is misleading at this resolution.

Crime counts also measure reports, not events. A neighborhood where people trust the police enough to call them can look worse on paper than one where they do not.

Frequently asked questions

Is Atlanta safe to walk around?

Yes, on main streets in Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead and the eastside neighborhoods, at any normal hour. Atlanta’s difficulty is that it is not continuously walkable: pleasant districts are separated by stretches of highway ramp, surface parking and empty blocks. The safety problem is usually the gap between two good areas, not either area.

Is downtown Atlanta safe at night?

Yes on the lit main corridors and around venues. Zone 5, which covers Downtown and Midtown, saw crime fall 24% year to date, the largest drop of any Atlanta police zone, and recorded five homicides. Take a rideshare rather than crossing empty blocks after midnight.

What part of Atlanta should you stay away from?

At night, and only if you have no reason to be there: Vine City, English Avenue and Bankhead in Zone 1, which recorded 588 aggravated assaults and 17 homicides year to date, and the residential parts of southeast Atlanta in Zone 3, the only zone where overall crime rose in 2026. None of these contain visitor attractions.

Is Atlanta safe for a woman traveling alone?

Yes, with the standard precautions any large city requires. Base yourself in Midtown or Buckhead, use MARTA and rideshare rather than long night walks, and keep phone and bag secured in crowds. Atlanta’s violent crime is overwhelmingly aggravated assault between people who know each other rather than stranger attacks on visitors.

Is Atlanta safer than New York?

The comparison is not meaningful as usually made, because Atlanta’s city limits contain a small fraction of its metro population while New York’s contain most of theirs. What can be said from the data: Atlanta recorded 53 homicides in the first 32 weeks of 2026, down 16%, and violence is heavily concentrated in zones with no visitor destinations.

Is MARTA safe to use as a tourist?

Yes. MARTA recorded 2.72 Part I crimes per million passenger boardings in May 2026 against its own published ceiling of 4.15, employs 268 sworn officers and monitors more than 12,000 cameras. A single fare is $2.50 and trains run from inside the airport terminal to Downtown and Midtown.

Is Atlanta’s crime rate going up or down in 2026?

Both, depending on the category. Overall crime is down 14% and property crime down 19%, while violent crime is up 15% because aggravated assault rose 16%. Homicide is down 16%. Those figures are all from the same APD report for the year to 8 August 2026.

Do I need a rental car in Atlanta?

Not for a Downtown, Midtown or Buckhead trip. MARTA connects the airport to all three, and a rental car adds the city’s single most common crime, theft from a parked vehicle, to your trip. A car is worth it only if you are leaving the city.
