Best Time to Visit

From my experience, the best time to explore the Museo del Desierto is during weekday mornings, especially Tuesday through Thursday. The crowds are thinner then, and you’ll have more space to really soak in the exhibits. If you’re visiting during summer months (June to August), I’d suggest getting there right when they open – the air conditioning is a blessed relief from the desert heat! Weekends tend to get pretty packed, especially during school holidays, so plan accordingly if you’re not a fan of crowds.

How to Get There

Getting to the museum is pretty straightforward. Most visitors drive, and there’s plenty of parking available. If you’re staying in central Saltillo, you can easily grab a taxi or use a ride-sharing app – most drivers know exactly where the museum is. Local buses also run regular routes that stop near the museum, though you might want to double-check the schedule since they can be a bit unpredictable (learned that one the hard way!).

Tips for Visiting

Plan to spend at least 3-4 hours here – there’s way more to see than you might think! The dinosaur exhibits alone could eat up an hour of your time. Bring a light jacket even in summer; the AC can get pretty chilly inside (I made that mistake my first visit). The restaurant serves decent food, but prices are a bit steep. You might wanna pack some snacks if you’re traveling with kids.

Photography is allowed in most areas, but leave the flash off to protect the specimens. The interactive exhibits are super popular with children, so visiting these areas earlier in the day means shorter wait times. Some of the exhibit descriptions are only in Spanish, so downloading a translation app beforehand can be helpful.

Make sure to check out the live animal exhibits during feeding times – it’s way more interesting! The staff usually posts these times at the entrance. Oh, and don’t skip the gift shop at the end of your visit; they’ve got some pretty unique items you won’t find anywhere else in Saltillo.

Keep your eyes peeled for special temporary exhibitions – they change every few months and often feature some really cool stuff. Last time I visited, they had this amazing display about prehistoric sea creatures that used to live in the region. Who knew there were ancient sharks in the desert?

If you’re into photography, morning light creates some gorgeous effects through the building’s modern architecture. And definitely take advantage of the guided tours if they’re available – the guides know tons of fascinating details that aren’t included in the regular displays. They’ll tell you things like how they actually discovered some of the fossils on display, which honestly makes the whole experience way more interesting.
