Description
Looking for a fantastic day out in Weymouth? I absolutely love Lodmoor Country Park – it’s one of those places that keeps drawing me back whenever I’m in Dorset. This sprawling green space spans over 350 acres and, honestly, it’s pretty amazing how much they’ve packed into it! I’ve spent countless afternoons here with my family, and there’s always something new to discover.
The park beautifully combines natural landscapes with family-friendly attractions. You’ll find peaceful walking trails winding through wildflower meadows (perfect for those moments when you need to clear your head), alongside modern play areas that’ll keep the little ones entertained for hours. And let me tell you, the mini train ride is an absolute hit – I still get excited about it, even as an adult!
One of my favorite spots is the nature reserve area, where you can spot all sorts of local wildlife. If you’re lucky, you might catch glimpses of rare birds – I once saw a kingfisher darting across the water, which was pretty special. The park also features an excellent aquarium, Sealife Centre, right on its grounds, though that’s a separate attraction worth its own visit.
Key Features
• Mini railway that loops around the park (trust me, it’s more fun than you’d expect!)
• Multiple children’s play areas with modern equipment
• Extensive network of walking and cycling trails
• Pirate ship playground (my nephew’s absolute favorite)
• Wildlife-rich nature reserve with bird watching opportunities
• Picnic areas with plenty of tables and benches
• Well-maintained public restrooms
• Dog-friendly areas and walking paths
• Seasonal butterfly garden
• Outdoor gym equipment
• Large car park with accessible spaces
• Café serving snacks and refreshments
Best Time to Visit
From my experience, Lodmoor Country Park really shines during late spring and summer, typically between May and September. The wildflowers are in full bloom, and the weather’s usually perfect for picnics and outdoor activities. That said, each season brings its own charm – autumn’s pretty spectacular when the leaves change color.
If you’re bringing kids, I’d suggest visiting during term-time weekdays when it’s quieter. Weekends can get pretty busy, especially during school holidays and sunny days. Early mornings are particularly peaceful – I love getting there around 9am when the morning light is gorgeous and you can hear the birds singing.
How to Get There
Getting to Lodmoor Country Park is pretty straightforward. If you’re driving (which I find is the easiest way), you’ll find it just east of Weymouth town center. The park’s well-signposted once you’re in Weymouth, just follow the brown tourist signs. There’s plenty of parking available, though it can fill up quick during peak season.
Coming by public transport? No problem! Regular local buses stop near the park entrance – just hop on any service heading towards Preston Road. If you’re arriving by train into Weymouth station, it’s about a 20-minute walk along the seafront, or you can grab a taxi for around £7.
Tips for Visiting
After countless visits, I’ve picked up some handy tips that’ll help you make the most of your day. First off, bring a picnic! While there’s a café on-site, I find it’s much more fun (and budget-friendly) to pack your own lunch and find a nice spot on the grass.
Wear comfortable shoes – you’ll do more walking than you expect. The paths are mostly flat and well-maintained, but you’ll want good footwear to explore properly. If you’re bringing dogs, remember to pack some bags and keep them leashed in certain areas.
The park can get muddy after rain (learned that one the hard way!), so check the weather forecast before visiting. During summer, don’t forget sun protection – there are some shaded areas, but many parts of the park are quite exposed.
Oh, and here’s a local secret – the best time for photography is during ‘golden hour’ just before sunset. The light hits the meadows just right, creating some absolutely stunning views across the park. And if you’re planning to ride the mini train, try to do it earlier in the day when queues are shorter.
Remember to bring some cash for parking and refreshments, though most places accept cards now. And if you’re visiting with kids, pack a change of clothes – the water play areas are irresistible on warm days!
