Located in southwestern Kenya, Ruma National Park is a hidden gem that’s truly off the beaten path. This 120-square-kilometer wildlife sanctuary is one of Kenya’s most underappreciated treasures, and I absolutely love that about it. The park’s landscape is a stunning mix of rolling hills, woodlands, and sweeping savannah grasslands that create an incredibly diverse ecosystem.

What makes this park extra special is that it’s the only protected area in Kenya where you can spot the rare roan antelope – and let me tell you, seeing these magnificent creatures in person is something else! During my last visit, I was blown away by how the morning mist settled over the golden grasslands, creating this almost magical atmosphere that photographers dream about.

Best Time to Visit

I’ve visited Ruma during different seasons, and I gotta say – timing can make or break your experience. The dry seasons (December to February and June to September) are your best bet. The grass is shorter then, making wildlife spotting way easier. Plus, the animals tend to gather around water sources, which means better viewing opportunities.

But here’s a local secret – late June to early July is particularly amazing. The weather’s just perfect, and the morning light creates this golden glow that makes everything look spectacular. Trust me, your photos will thank you! Just avoid the long rains between March and May – the roads can get pretty tricky to navigate, and some areas become inaccessible.

How to Get There

Getting to Ruma is part of the adventure! The park is accessible by road from several directions, and I’ll break it down for you. From Kisumu, take the Kisumu-Homa Bay road and turn at Rodi Kopany. Another route is via Kisii-Migori road, turning at Ranen. The drive takes about 4 hours from Kisumu.

The roads leading to the park aren’t always in the best shape (especially during rainy seasons), so I strongly recommend using a 4×4 vehicle. And yeah, I learned this the hard way – my first visit in a regular sedan was… interesting, to say the least! You can arrange transport through tour operators in major cities or hire a vehicle in Kisumu or Homa Bay.

Tips for Visiting

After multiple visits to Ruma, I’ve picked up some handy tips that’ll make your trip smoother. First off, book your accommodation in advance – the park only has limited options, and they fill up quick during peak season. I once had to change my entire itinerary because I didn’t plan ahead!

Bring plenty of water and snacks – the closest shops are quite far away. Don’t forget your camera with a good zoom lens – those roan antelopes can be shy! Wear neutral-colored clothing (avoid bright colors), and bring a light jacket for early morning game drives – it can get surprisingly chilly.

Make sure to carry cash for park fees, as card facilities aren’t always reliable. Early morning and late afternoon are prime wildlife viewing times – plan your game drives accordingly. If you’re into birding (like me!), pack a good pair of binoculars and a bird guide. The park’s variety of habitats makes it a bird-watcher’s paradise.

And here’s something most guides won’t tell you – the local Luo guides are incredible storytellers. Spend some time chatting with them; their knowledge of the park’s history and wildlife behavior is fascinating. Just remember to respect the park rules and keep your distance from the wildlife – no matter how tempting it might be to get closer for that perfect shot!
