Description

West Lake (西湖) is a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, covering roughly 6.39 square kilometres and encircled by hills, historic causeways, Buddhist temples, and classical gardens that have shaped Chinese art and literature for over a millennium. I have walked the full perimeter and the scale genuinely surprises first-time visitors — this is not a decorative city pond but a substantial natural lake woven into the fabric of a major city. The surrounding scenic area encompasses forested hills, pagodas visible from kilometres away, and dozens of named viewpoints formalised as the Ten Scenes of West Lake, a classification dating to the Song dynasty. The lake is free to access along its shores and causeways, though individual enclosed attractions charge separate entry fees.

Key Features

The two main causeways — Bai Causeway in the north and Su Causeway running north to south across the western portion — are the most practical ways to experience the lake on foot or by bicycle. Both are flat, paved, and lined with willows and peach trees that make spring visits particularly scenic. Leifeng Pagoda, rebuilt in 2002 on its original Song-dynasty foundations on the southern shore, is the most visited paid attraction and offers panoramic views from its upper floors. On the lake’s central island, Xiaoying Island (accessible by public ferry from lakeside docks) holds the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, three stone lanterns in the water that are among China’s most reproduced landscape images. Guo’s Villa on the western shore is a well-preserved classical Jiangnan garden. Huagang Park, free to enter, is a large lakeside garden popular for viewing koi and osmanthus in autumn.

  • Bai Causeway: Northern causeway connecting the Broken Bridge (断桥) to Gu Hill (孤山)
  • Su Causeway: Longer western causeway with six arched bridges, ideal for cycling
  • Leifeng Pagoda: Paid entry; reconstructed pagoda on the southern shore with lift access
  • Xiaoying Island: Reached by ferry; contains the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon scenic site
  • Gu Hill (孤山): Largest island, connected to shore, home to Zhejiang Provincial Museum and Zhongshan Park

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March to April) and autumn (October to November) offer the most comfortable temperatures and the most visually rewarding conditions at West Lake, with spring cherry blossoms along Bai Causeway and autumn osmanthus fragrance throughout the park areas. Summer is hot and humid with frequent crowds; the lake remains beautiful but visiting early morning, before 8 a.m., makes a significant practical difference. Winter visits are quieter, and snowfall on the lake — celebrated in classical Chinese poetry — does occasionally occur in January and February. The Broken Bridge (断桥残雪, Remnant Snow on Broken Bridge) is one of the Ten Scenes specifically associated with winter.

How to Get There

West Lake is directly accessible by Hangzhou Metro Line 1 (get off at Longxiangqiao Station or Fengqi Road Station on the northeastern edge) and Metro Line 4, with multiple stops within walking distance of the lake’s eastern shore along Yan’an Road and Nanshan Road. From Hangzhou East Railway Station, which serves high-speed rail from Shanghai, Beijing, and other major cities, Metro Line 1 connects directly to the lake area. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are widely available throughout Hangzhou. The eastern lakeside is walkable from the Wulin Square commercial area. Public buses also serve multiple stops around the lake perimeter. Parking exists near several lake entrances for those arriving by car.

Tips for Visiting

Renting a shared bicycle at one of the docks along the eastern or northern shore is the most efficient way to cover the full perimeter and both main causeways in a single half-day visit. Arrive at Leifeng Pagoda when it opens to avoid queues; the view from the top at dusk is worth the entry fee. The public ferry to Xiaoying Island sells tickets at the dock — no advance booking is needed, but waits can be long on weekends and public holidays. Longjing tea from the hillside villages southwest of the lake (reachable by bus or taxi) is worth purchasing directly from producers rather than from souvenir stalls near the lake. Keep in mind that major Chinese public holidays, especially the National Day Golden Week in early October, bring very large crowds to the entire scenic area.
