Is Waze Available in Germany? Essential Insights for Drivers in 2025

Is Waze Available in Germany? Essential Insights for Drivers in 2026

Real Journey Travel and Tours October 31, 2025 | Last Updated: July 22, 2026 Travel 0

Updated July 22, 2026

Yes, Waze is available in Germany and works exactly as it does across the rest of Europe – live traffic, turn-by-turn routing, road hazards, and crowd-sourced alerts all function normally. The one catch is legal, not technical: using Waze’s speed-camera and police alerts while driving is illegal in Germany under Section 23(1c) of the road-traffic code (StVO), and it carries a €75 fine plus a point in Flensburg. The app itself is not banned – you just need to switch that single feature off before you drive.

Waze in Germany: the quick answer

  • Available? Yes. Waze downloads and runs normally on iPhone and Android in Germany.
  • Legal to navigate with? Yes. Maps, routing, live traffic, and hazard reports are all fine.
  • Speed-camera alerts? Illegal to use while driving (Section 23(1c) StVO). Turn them off.
  • Penalty if caught using them: €75 fine and 1 point in Flensburg; police can order the device switched off.
  • Does Waze disable them for you? No – you are responsible for turning off Speed cams and Police alerts in Settings.

Is Waze available in Germany?

Yes. Waze is fully available in Germany and behaves like it does anywhere else in the EU. You can download it free from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and every core function works: live map, fastest-route calculation, real-time traffic from the German Waze community, accident and hazard reports, road-closure warnings, and fuel-price data. Germany has a large, active user base, so traffic and hazard reports refresh quickly on major routes and around cities like Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Cologne. Coverage is strongest in urban areas and along the Autobahn network; on quiet rural back roads you will see fewer live reports, but routing still works because it draws on Waze’s base map.

Is Waze legal in Germany?

Using Waze to navigate is completely legal in Germany. Only one feature is restricted: the speed-camera and police alerts. German law does not ban the app, block it from the app stores, or stop you from using it for directions. What it prohibits is actively using a device or app to warn you about roadside speed traps while you drive. So Waze as a navigation tool is fine; Waze as a live radar-warning tool is not.

Why are Waze’s speed-camera alerts illegal in Germany?

Section 23(1c) of the StVO (Germany’s road-traffic regulations) forbids the driver from operating any device whose purpose is to detect or warn about traffic-monitoring equipment – fixed and mobile speed cameras included. A 2020 amendment made clear this covers smartphone apps and their functions, not just standalone radar detectors, closing the loophole that once let apps like Waze off the hook. The rule targets the person driving: you may not run the camera-warning feature yourself while behind the wheel. Whether a passenger may operate it is a legal gray area that German courts have not settled, so the safe approach is to keep the alerts off entirely.

Map and turn-by-turn navigationYesCore function, unrestricted
Live traffic and re-routingYesCommunity-sourced, works well in cities
Accident and hazard reportsYesAllowed; not a camera-warning feature

Speed-camera (Blitzer) alertsNoProhibited under Section 23(1c) StVO
Police / speed-check alertsNoSame prohibition applies

What is the fine for using speed-camera alerts in Germany?

Getting caught using a speed-camera warning app while driving means a €75 fine and 1 point on the Flensburg driving register. Police can also order you to switch off or delete the feature on the spot, and in principle confiscate the device being used for it. In practice, enforcement focuses on dedicated radar-detector hardware rather than phone apps: officers rarely inspect a moving driver’s screen, and prosecutions for app use alone are uncommon. That does not make it legal – it just means the risk is low. The fine and point still apply the moment an officer sees the alerts running.

How do you turn off Waze’s speed-camera and police alerts?

Disabling the restricted alerts takes under a minute and keeps you compliant with German law while every other Waze feature keeps working:

  1. Open Waze and tap My Waze (or the search icon), then the Settings gear.
  2. Go to Alerts and reports, then Reports.
  3. Open Speed cams and turn off both Show on map and Alert me while driving.
  4. Open Police and switch off the same two toggles.
  5. While you are there, you can leave Speed limit alerts on – showing the legal limit is allowed.

Does Waze automatically disable camera alerts in Germany?

No. Waze does not force the speed-camera feature off for German users – the responsibility is yours. The app stays fully functional wherever you are, and the camera and police toggles remain available in Settings, so it is on the driver to switch them off before setting off. This is a common point of confusion: headlines claiming Waze is “banned in Germany” are misleading. The app is not banned and not removed from German app stores; only the act of using the camera-warning function while driving is against the rules.

Could Germany ban speed-camera apps entirely?

As of 2026 there is no total ban – only a proposal. Germany’s federal states (the Bundesrat) have pushed to tighten the rule so that merely having a speed-camera app installed on your phone, not just using it while driving, would be illegal. That measure has not been enacted into federal law, so the current position stands: the app is legal to install and legal to use for navigation, and only the live camera-warning feature is off-limits behind the wheel. If the stricter rule ever passes, we will update this guide – for now, keep the alerts switched off and you are on the right side of the law.

Waze vs Google Maps vs Apple Maps in Germany

The camera-alert rule applies to every navigation app, not just Waze. Google Maps also offers speed-camera reporting in many countries and is subject to the same Section 23 prohibition, so its camera alerts are the part to avoid using while driving in Germany. For plain navigation, all the major apps work well here.

Apple MapsYesClean iPhone integration, good city coverageNo speed-camera reporting to worry about

Is Waze reliable across Germany?

Waze is reliable on Germany’s busy routes and a little thinner on remote back roads. Its accuracy depends on how many drivers are nearby feeding data, so on the Autobahn and around major cities the live traffic, jam warnings, and re-routing are excellent. In sparsely populated rural regions – parts of the Eifel, the Bavarian Forest, or the far northeast – there are fewer active users, so real-time reports are sparser, though the underlying routing still gets you there. If you plan to drive through low-signal areas, download an offline map in a backup app so you are not left without directions when mobile data drops. Waze needs a data connection to work at its best.

Frequently asked questions

Is Waze banned in Germany?

No. Waze is not banned in Germany and remains in both app stores. Only using its speed-camera and police alerts while driving is prohibited under Section 23(1c) StVO; navigation, traffic, and hazard features are all legal.

What happens if I use Waze speed-camera alerts in Germany?

If police catch you using the camera-warning feature while driving, the penalty is a €75 fine and 1 point on the Flensburg register, and they can require you to switch it off. Enforcement is uncommon for apps, but the fine applies whenever it happens.

Do I need to turn the alerts off myself?

Yes. Waze does not disable the feature automatically for German users. Go to Settings, Alerts and reports, Reports, and switch off both Speed cams and Police (Show on map and Alert me while driving).

Can a passenger use the speed-camera alerts?

This is a legal gray area. The law targets the driver operating the device, and German courts have not clearly ruled on passengers. To stay safe, keep the camera and police alerts off for the whole vehicle.

Does Waze work offline in Germany?

Not really. Waze needs a data connection for its live traffic and routing. For low-signal rural drives, keep an offline-capable map app as a backup so you always have directions.

Is Google Maps a safer choice than Waze in Germany?

Both are legal to navigate with, and both are subject to the same Section 23 rule on camera alerts. Apple Maps avoids the issue entirely because it does not offer speed-camera reporting. Pick whichever you prefer and keep any radar-warning feature turned off.
