Best Time to Visit

From my experience, June through October offers the sweet spot for visiting Sunset Kendwa. These months bring clear skies, lower humidity, and perfect beach weather. The water is incredibly calm during this period – ideal for swimming and snorkeling. December through February brings warmer temperatures but still maintains relatively dry conditions.

Avoid the long rains from March to May if possible. While room rates might be tempting during this period, the heavy rainfall can put a damper on beach activities. That said, if you’re a budget traveler who doesn’t mind occasional showers, you might find some fantastic deals during this time.

How to Get There

Getting to Sunset Kendwa is part of the adventure! After landing at Zanzibar International Airport, you’ve got a few options. The most straightforward route is booking the hotel’s airport shuttle – it’s not the cheapest option, but it saves you the hassle of negotiating with local drivers.

If you’re feeling more adventurous (like I was on my first visit), you can catch a dala-dala (local minibus) from Stone Town to Kendwa. It’s definitely more time-consuming but gives you a genuine taste of local life. The journey takes about 1.5 hours by car or 2-3 hours by dala-dala.

For those who prefer more comfort, plenty of taxis make the journey from Stone Town to Kendwa. Just remember to agree on the price before starting your journey – a little friendly negotiation is expected and appreciated.

Tips for Visiting

After spending time here, I’ve picked up some insider tips that’ll make your stay even better. First off, request a room on the upper level if possible – the views are significantly better, and you’ll catch more of those famous Indian Ocean breezes.

Don’t miss the sunset – it’s not just in the name! Grab a spot at the beach bar around 6 PM, order one of their fantastic fruit cocktails, and watch nature’s daily show. The colors are simply incredible.

Pack reef shoes if you’re planning to do any snorkeling. While the beach is sandy perfection, there are some rocky patches in the water that can be tough on bare feet. Speaking of snorkeling, ask the dive center staff about the best spots – they know some hidden gems that aren’t in any guidebook.

The WiFi can be a bit spotty (hey, you’re on a beach in Zanzibar!), so download any essential maps or documents before arrival. And while the restaurant serves good food, don’t be afraid to try some of the local beach restaurants nearby – they often offer amazing fresh seafood at better prices.

Book your activities through the hotel’s dive center early in your stay. This way, if weather forces a cancellation, you’ll have time to reschedule. And one last thing – bring cash! While the hotel accepts cards, many nearby shops and restaurants are cash-only.

Remember to respect local customs – Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim, so modest dress is appreciated when you’re away from the beach. The locals are incredibly friendly, and a simple “Jambo” (hello in Swahili) goes a long way in making connections.

Oh, and here’s a quirky tip I learned the hard way – keep your balcony doors closed when you’re not around. The local monkeys are adorable but quite mischievous and won’t think twice about raiding your snack stash!
