Spring (April to May) is particularly gorgeous when the surrounding meadows burst into color with wildflowers. The monastery sits above this small spa town, and you’ve got options for reaching it. The most straightforward way is driving – there’s a decent road leading most of the way up, with parking available near the monastery.

If you’re feeling energetic (and trust me, I’ve done this multiple times), you can take the hiking path from Ovčar Banja. It’s steep but well-marked, taking about 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace. Just remember to wear comfortable shoes – I learned that lesson the hard way on my first visit!

Tips for Visiting

As someone who’s visited this place more times than I can count, let me share some insider tips. First off, dress respectfully – this is an active monastery, not just a tourist site. Ladies, bring a scarf to cover your head inside the church, and everyone should avoid shorts and sleeveless tops.

Bring water! The climb up can be thirsty work, and while there’s usually water available at the monastery, it’s better to have your own.
