It’s a massive stretch of land – about 25,667 square kilometers to be exact – sitting right at the southern edge of the mysterious Tarim Basin. This remote county, which locals also call Moyu or Qaraqash, is part of the Hotan Prefecture and lemme tell you, it’s got character!

Okay, here’s the deal – timing your visit to Karakax County is super important. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are absolute perfection. The temperatures are just right, and you won’t have to deal with the intense summer heat or winter cold. Summer months can be pretty brutal with temperatures soaring above 95°F (35°C), and winters can drop below freezing. I made the mistake of visiting in July once, and whew, that desert heat is no joke!

How to Get There

Getting to Karakax isn’t exactly a walk in the park, but that’s part of the adventure! The nearest major airport is in Hotan, and from there you’ll need to take a bus or hire a car to reach Karakax County. The roads are decent these days, much better than when I first visited years ago. You can catch regular buses from Hotan city, which take about 2-3 hours depending on stops. Some travelers combine their visit with a larger Xinjiang itinerary, arriving from Kashgar or Urumqi by long-distance bus or private transport.

Listen up, cause these tips might just save your trip! First off, bring cash – lots of it. Many places don’t accept cards, and ATMs can be scarce. Learn a few basic Uyghur phrases – the locals really appreciate it, and I’ve gotten some of the best local recommendations just by showing interest in the language.

Dress conservatively – this is a traditional area, and respect goes a long way. Pack a good hat and sunscreen, even if you’re not visiting in summer. The sun here is intense year-round. Oh, and don’t forget to bring a good camera – the light here during sunrise and sunset is absolutely magical.

Try to arrange your accommodation in advance, especially during peak seasons. While there are hotels in the county, options can be limited. And speaking of planning ahead, get your travel permits sorted before arriving – you’ll need them for this region.

The local food is amazing, but if you’ve got a sensitive stomach, ease into it. Start with cooked dishes and gradually work your way up to the street food scene. The lamb skewers here are to die for, but make sure they’re well-cooked.
