The city center buzzes with local life – not the touristy kind, but the authentic Hungarian sort where you’ll hear more Magyar than English.

Best Time to Visit

From my experience, late spring (May-June) and early fall (September) are absolutely perfect for exploring Zalaegerszeg. The weather’s just right – not too hot like in July and August when temperatures can get pretty intense. Plus, you’ll catch some awesome local festivals during these months. I remember attending a wine festival in September, and it was incredible – the locals were super friendly and eager to share their culture.

How to Get There

Getting to Zalaegerszeg is pretty straightforward. The closest major airport is in Budapest (about 220 km away), and from there you’ve got options. I’d recommend taking the train – it’s comfortable and gives you a chance to see the Hungarian countryside. The bus service is reliable too, but personally, I prefer the train. If you’re driving, the M7 motorway and Route 76 will get you there. And yeah, sometimes the signs can be a bit confusing, but that’s part of the adventure!

Tips for Visiting

After spending time here, I’ve picked up some handy tips that’ll make your visit smoother. First off, learn a few basic Hungarian phrases – the locals really appreciate it, and it’ll make your life easier since English isn’t widely spoken. The city center is walkable, but wear comfortable shoes because those cobblestone streets can be tough on your feet!

Try to time your visit with the farmers’ market – it happens several times a week and it’s where you’ll find amazing local produce and traditional foods. I bought some incredible Hungarian paprika there that I still use at home.

Don’t miss out on the thermal baths – but bring your own towel and flip-flops. The locals usually have their own. Oh, and if you’re planning to visit museums, remember they’re often closed on Mondays. I learned that one the hard way!

Keep some cash handy – while many places accept cards, smaller shops and cafes might not. And speaking of cafes, try the local cake shops. Hungarian pastries are incredible, and the ones in Zalaegerszeg are no exception. I still dream about this walnut cream cake I had at a tiny bakery near the city center.

For budget travelers, consider visiting during the off-season (November-March). Yeah, it’s colder, but the prices are better and you’ll get a more authentic experience of local life. Just pack a warm coat!

And here’s something most guidebooks won’t tell you – the best views of the city aren’t from the obvious tourist spots. Head to the hills on the outskirts during sunset. I stumbled upon this spot by accident, and it’s become my favorite place to watch the sun go down over the city.
