Green Mountain

Description

Green Mountain in Lakewood, Colorado, is one of those places that feels both wild and surprisingly accessible at the same time. Just minutes west of Denver, the peak and its surrounding open space—formally called William Frederick Hayden Park—offers a slice of Front Range scenery that’s easy to reach without having to plan an all-day mountain expedition. Rising to about 6,800 feet above sea level, the mountain isn’t the tallest in Colorado by any means, but don’t underestimate it. The open trails wind through rolling hills, grasslands, and rugged ridges, making it a favorite among hikers, bikers, runners, and even families just wanting a few hours outdoors.

The area is especially well-loved for its views. On one side, you get sweeping panoramas of the entire Denver metro area, stretching toward the high plains. Turn the other direction, and the Rocky Mountains rise up, with peaks near Golden and beyond. On clear days, it’s even possible to spot Mount Evans in the distance. For locals, it’s practically a backyard escape after work; for travelers, it’s a chance to experience quintessential Colorado landscapes without needing a four-wheel drive or oxygen tank. That balance of convenience and open space is what makes Green Mountain so special.

Like any place that gets so much foot traffic, it has its quirks. Depending on when you go, trails can be busy, and the terrain in the heat of summer can feel a little harsh since there’s not a ton of tree cover. Still, the wide-open character gives it a distinctly different vibe compared to the denser, forested hikes further west in Jefferson County. For those who don’t mind some sun and wind, this open feel adds to the beauty—you really get a sense for Colorado’s dramatic skies, sweeping clouds, and endless horizons. At the same time, wildlife like deer and red-tailed hawks remind you you’re still part of something wilder than a city park.
