Booking travel through AAA gets you three things you cannot get by booking direct: rental-car fee waivers worth more per day than most people save on the rate, Travel Accident Insurance of $100,000 to $500,000 that only applies when the trip is arranged and purchased through a AAA Travel Agency, and a human travel agent whose planning time is free on packages and cruises. It also costs money in places nobody advertises. AAA Hudson Valley charges members $50 to issue a domestic airline ticket and $75 for an international one, per traveler, non-refundable, charged before you are even quoted an itinerary. Whether the AAA member benefits are worth it depends almost entirely on what you book, and on which of the roughly 30 independent AAA clubs you belong to.
Quick answers
- Is planning free? Yes for packages, cruises and tours, where AAA earns commission from the supplier. No for air-only, rail, and independent research.
- What does an airline ticket cost to book? $50 domestic and $75 international per traveler at AAA Hudson Valley as of 1 May 2026. Non-members pay $100 and $150.
- What is the single biggest reason to book through AAA? Travel Accident Insurance that attaches automatically to the booking: $100,000 Classic, $300,000 Plus, $500,000 Premier.
- Best car-rental perk? Hertz waives the Young Renter Fee for AAA members aged 20 to 24 and charges nothing for additional drivers who are also members.
- Is the Best Price Guarantee a refund? No. AAA matches the lower rate and issues a $50 certificate you can only spend on a future booking of at least $500.
- Does any of this apply to my club? Check. Dues, fees, tier names, member discounts and coverage limits are set club by club, not nationally.

Are AAA travel benefits worth it?
For a driver who rents cars, yes, and usually on the first rental of the year. For someone who books flights and hotels online and never rents, no. The break-even is not a matter of opinion, because Hertz publishes the exact dollar value of the fees it waives for AAA members on its own partner page.
AAA Hudson Valley charges $67 a year for Basic and $106 for Plus, both with a one-time $15 enrollment fee. Set those against the waivers below.
| Situation | Hertz fee waived for AAA members | Value on a 7-day rental | Covers Basic dues at $67? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driver aged 20 to 24 | Young Renter Fee, about $25 per day | About $175 | Yes, roughly 2.6 times over |
| Second driver, also a AAA member | Additional driver fee, about $15 per day | About $105 | Yes, before the associate fee |
| Traveling with a small child | One child, infant or booster seat | About $98 | Yes |
| Base rate only, no waivers apply | Up to 20% off the pay-later base rate | Varies with the rate | Only on an expensive rental |
The pattern is that AAA pays back through fees other companies charge rather than through headline discounts. A 22-year-old renting a car for a week saves more from one waived surcharge than from any percentage off the rate. Someone who rents twice a year at a normal age and never books a package is buying AAA roadside assistance with a travel section attached, which is a fair purchase for a road-tripper and a poor one for a flyer. Classic membership plus one long drive a year is the honest floor.
Does AAA charge for travel services?
Yes, for several things, and the fees are real money. Most guides say AAA travel planning is complimentary. That is true only for the bookings AAA earns commission on. Where there is no commission, the club bills you directly. AAA Hudson Valley publishes its schedule openly, with rates effective 1 May 2026.
| Transaction (per traveler) | AAA member | Non-member |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic airline ticket | $50 | $100 |
| International airline ticket | $75 | $150 |
| Airline ticket exchange | $75 | $100 |
| Amtrak rail booking | $50 | $100 |
| Trip cancellation (on top of the supplier’s own fee) | $50 | $150 |
| Independent research, FIT tour (credited if you book) | $100 | $150 |
| Passport photos | $6 | $10 |
| International Driving Permit | $20 | $20 |
Two consequences worth doing the arithmetic on. A family of four booking international flights through this club pays $300 in agency fees before a single fare is counted, against $0 booking the same tickets on the airline’s own site. And a trip you cancel costs $50 to the club in addition to whatever the tour operator or cruise line charges, which is the same layered-fee structure that catches people out with travel agent cancellation fees generally.
These are one club’s numbers. Another club will differ. That is the point, and it is covered below.
What do you get for booking a trip through AAA rather than direct?
Travel Accident Insurance, and it is the one benefit on this page that exists because you booked through AAA. The Auto Club Group states that coverage attaches automatically when a trip is arranged and purchased through your AAA Travel Agency, and that the amount scales with your membership tier.
| Membership tier | Travel Accident Insurance | Applies when |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | $100,000 | Trip arranged and purchased through AAA Travel |
| Plus | $300,000 | Trip arranged and purchased through AAA Travel |
| Premier | $500,000 | Trip arranged and purchased through AAA Travel |
Read the scope before you count on it. The policy covers accidental loss of life, limbs, sight, speech or hearing while traveling in a common carrier arranged through the club. A common carrier is any land, water or air conveyance operated by a business that transports people for hire. The full benefit also applies traveling to or from a terminal, station or airport immediately before or after scheduled departure or arrival, and in a rental car whose lease was arranged through the local AAA Travel Agency alongside the common-carrier transport.
This is accident cover, not trip-cancellation cover. It will not reimburse a missed connection, a cancelled tour or a hospital bill. For that you are buying a separate policy, and the same arithmetic applies as when you calculate trip cost for travel insurance anywhere else.
What travel insurance does AAA sell, and how is it different?
AAA travel insurance is underwritten and administered by Allianz Global Assistance, and is sold to members as Allianz Travel Insurance through AAA. It is an entirely separate product from the Travel Accident Insurance above, and the two have opposite conditions, which is the detail worth carrying away.
| Travel Accident Insurance | Allianz travel insurance through AAA | |
|---|---|---|
| What it covers | Accidental loss of life, limbs, sight, speech or hearing on a common carrier | Trip cancellation, interruption, travel delays, baggage and emergency medical protection |
| What it costs | Nothing extra, included with membership | A separate premium per trip or per year |
| Must you book through AAA? | Yes. It only attaches to trips arranged and purchased through AAA Travel | No. You can buy the policy through AAA even if the trip was booked elsewhere |
| Amount | $100,000 / $300,000 / $500,000 by tier | Set by the plan you choose |
Two features AAA Club Alliance publishes are worth checking against a rival quote. Kids 17 and under are included free on select plans when traveling with a parent or grandparent, which changes the arithmetic sharply for a family of four. And the assistance line runs 24 hours a day in 70 languages, alongside the Allyz app and proactive SmartBenefits notifications. Get a comparison quote anyway; a member discount on a policy is only a discount if the underlying premium is competitive.
What discounts does AAA offer on rental cars?
Hertz is the flagship partnership, and its own partner page lists the benefits side by side with what a non-member gets. The savings that matter are the waived fees, not the percentage.
| Hertz benefit | AAA member | Non-member |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 20% off base rates, all car rentals | Yes | No |
| Young Renter Fee waived, ages 20 to 24 | Yes | No |
| Free use of one child safety seat, infant or booster | Yes | No |
| No charge for additional drivers who are AAA members | Yes | No |
| 10% off the Hertz per-gallon Fuel Purchase Option price | Yes | No |
| Liability for damage to the rented vehicle limited to $5,000 | Yes | No |
| Complimentary Hertz Gold Plus Rewards membership | Yes | Yes |
| One free day after your first paid Gold rental | Yes | No |
| An extra 1% cash back on Hertz spend with a AAA Visa Signature travel credit card | Yes | No |
A correction that almost every article about AAA travel gets wrong, including the earlier version of this one: the free Hertz Gold Plus Rewards membership is not a AAA perk. Hertz’s own comparison marks it available to members and non-members alike. Anyone can join Gold Plus Rewards for nothing. What AAA adds is the free day credited after your first paid Gold rental, and that is the row worth quoting.
The $5,000 liability cap is the sleeper. Without it, damage to the rental is your problem up to the value of the car. Hertz limits an AAA member’s responsibility to $5,000 provided the rental agreement has not been violated, which is a materially different exposure from the default.
Conditions Hertz attaches: the AAA club discount code (CDP) must be in the reservation, a 24-hour advance reservation is required, benefits apply at participating locations in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, the additional driver and young renter must each be AAA members with a credit card in their own name, and you present your membership card at the counter. Miss the CDP code and none of it applies.

How does the AAA Best Price Guarantee actually work?
It is a rate match plus a restricted certificate, not a refund, and it excludes anything you book yourself online. AAA Mountain West Group publishes the terms in full, and they are worth reading before treating the guarantee as a reason to book.
| Condition | What the terms say |
|---|---|
| Deadline | Find a valid better rate within 24 hours of placing a deposit or paying in full |
| How you claim | Download the claim form, complete it inside that 24 hours, email it or bring it to a branch |
| What you receive | AAA matches the lower rate and issues a $50 AAA Travel Certificate, one per booking |
| Spending the certificate | Future bookings only, of at least $500 excluding taxes and fees, expires one year from issue |
| Online bookings | The certificate is not applicable to online bookings |
| How you must have booked | Local branch office or the Member Service Center, not AAA.com |
| What is covered | Base price of a cruise including port charges, or base price of a tour company |
| Whose rate counts | A lower rate from a North American IATA or ARC accredited business |
Stack those conditions and the ceiling is visible: the certificate is worth $50 against a future trip of $500 or more, so its maximum effective value is a 10% discount on a booking you have not taken yet, inside twelve months, made with a human rather than online. That is genuinely useful to somebody who cruises annually through a branch. It is worth nothing to somebody who booked on AAA.com, which is where most people book.
Does AAA offer travel packages with airfare, cruises or tours?
Yes, and vacation planning is where the free planning genuinely is free. AAA Travel sells cruises, escorted and independent tours, and land-and-air vacation packages through a roster of preferred travel providers, and the club is paid commission by those suppliers rather than by you. That is why travel advisors at a AAA branch will happily spend an hour building a cruise itinerary and then charge $50 to issue a single airline ticket: one earns commission and the other does not.
Two practical consequences. First, if you book travel as a package, cruise or tour, the agent’s time costs you nothing and the Best Price Guarantee and Travel Accident Insurance both attach. Second, if your trip is a flight plus an independently booked hotel, you are paying for the agent’s time and getting no commission-funded benefits, which is the case where booking yourself is usually the better call. Our guide to paying up front with a travel agent covers how deposit schedules differ between the two.
Is there an advantage to booking flights through AAA?
Rarely, if the flight is the whole booking. AAA does not have access to fares the airlines do not publish, and at AAA Hudson Valley an air-only ticket carries a $50 domestic or $75 international service fee per traveler that you do not pay booking direct. Add an exchange later and that is another $75.
Three cases where it still makes sense. Flights bundled inside a AAA Vacations package, where no separate ticketing fee applies and the accident cover attaches. Complex multi-city or award-adjacent itineraries where an experienced counselor’s time is worth more than the fee. And travelers who want a named person to call when a flight cancels rather than an airline queue, which is the same reasoning behind using a travel agent consultation at all.
How do AAA membership tiers change what you get as a traveler?
More than most comparisons admit, and not consistently between clubs. Tier names, prices, enrollment fees and coverage limits are all set locally. AAA Hudson Valley sells Basic, Plus and Plus Motorcycle. Other clubs sell Classic, Plus and Premier. The trip-interruption figure attached to the middle tier in one club is a fifth of the figure attached to the top tier in another.
| What differs | AAA Hudson Valley | Clubs using the Classic / Plus / Premier naming |
|---|---|---|
| Entry tier | Basic, $67 a year | Classic |
| Middle tier | Plus, $106 a year | Plus |
| Top tier sold | Plus Motorcycle, $134 a year | Premier |
| One-time enrollment fee | $15 | $10 at AAA South Jersey |
| Trip interruption on the tier above entry | Up to $350 | Up to $1,500 on Premier |
| Agency service fees | Premier members exempt from select fees | Set club by club |
Where trip interruption exists it is narrow. The Premier version reimburses up to $1,500 of meals, accommodation and substitute transport, but only on trips of 100 driving miles or more from home, and only for expenses in the first 96 hours from the initial delay. It is a road-trip benefit that happens to sit in a travel section.

What international travel services does AAA provide?
The one nobody else can provide is the International Driving Permit. Under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, only two organizations are authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs to U.S. citizens: AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance. Every other website offering an “international driver’s license” is selling a document no authority recognizes.
Two details that save money and arguments. You do not need to be a AAA member to buy an IDP from AAA, and at AAA Hudson Valley the fee is $20 for members and non-members alike. Passport photos are cheaper as a member, $6 against $10, which is the smallest benefit on this page and the one people use most often.
The other international-facing asset is AAA Diamonds, the association’s own inspection program. AAA inspectors visit hotels and restaurants unannounced across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and the Caribbean, scoring against four criteria the association calls the four Cs: cleanliness, comfort, cuisine and consistency. Five Diamond hotel inspections include an overnight stay by the inspector. The inventory runs to more than 28,000 Diamond-designated properties, and the 2026 Five Diamond hotel list ran to ten properties, seven of them in Mexico. If you are choosing between two similar hotels, the Diamond designation is a real third-party inspection rather than a user rating.
What travel deals does AAA offer for seniors?
There is no separate senior membership tier or senior discount rate at AAA. What older travelers actually get is the same member pricing everyone gets, applied to categories they use more: escorted tours, cruises, and rail. The two benefits that skew useful with age are the branch-based booking channel, which is the only one that qualifies for the Best Price Guarantee, and the tiered Travel Accident Insurance that attaches to trips booked through the agency.
Individual suppliers set their own senior pricing, and a AAA counselor can apply both a supplier’s senior rate and the AAA member rate to the same booking where the supplier permits it. Ask specifically; it is not applied automatically.
Why the numbers on this page may not match your AAA club
The American Automobile Association is a federation of independent regional clubs, not a single company. Each club sets its own dues, enrollment fee, agency service fees, tier names, coverage limits and promotional terms, and each publishes its own terms and conditions. AAA Mountain West Group’s Best Price Guarantee page states plainly that it is “applicable only to members of AAA Northern California, Nevada & Utah.” AAA Hudson Valley’s fee schedule binds AAA Hudson Valley.
Everything quoted here is sourced to a named club or to a supplier’s own partner page, and dated where the source dates it. To check your own, use AAA’s club finder at aaa.com/stop, then read your club’s agency service fee page and membership handbook before you book. If a figure on your club’s site disagrees with a figure here, your club’s site wins.
What this guide deliberately does not publish
- A national AAA membership price. There is not one. Dues are set per club, and quoting a single figure would be wrong for most readers. The Hudson Valley figures above are labeled as Hudson Valley’s.
- An “average member saving” percentage. The previous version of this page claimed members save 15% on hotels and 20% on car rentals on average. Neither figure has a source. The 20% is Hertz’s up to ceiling on base rates, not an average, and the hotel figure is unsupported. Both have been removed.
- Hotel chain discount percentages. Partner hotel rates change by chain, season and property, and any number printed here would be stale within months. Check the rate at booking.
- Your club’s exact travel accident terms. The $100,000 / $300,000 / $500,000 figures are The Auto Club Group’s. Consult your own club’s membership handbook for the full terms, conditions and exclusions.

AAA travel benefits: frequently asked questions
Are AAA travel agents free?
Free for commissionable bookings, billed for the rest. Planning and booking a cruise, tour or vacation package costs you nothing because the supplier pays the club. Air-only tickets, rail, ticket exchanges, cancellations and independent research carry published per-person service fees; at AAA Hudson Valley these run from $50 to $100 for members.
Does AAA charge a fee to book a flight?
At AAA Hudson Valley, yes: $50 per traveler for a domestic ticket and $75 for an international one as of 1 May 2026, with non-members paying double. The fee is non-refundable and is charged before an itinerary is quoted. Other clubs set their own; Premier members are exempt from select fees at some clubs.
Do AAA members get discounts on flights?
Not on published airfares as a rule. AAA sells the same fares the airlines publish. Where flights are bundled inside a AAA Vacations package the total package price can beat booking the pieces separately, and no separate ticketing fee applies. Treat any claim of AAA-only airfare discounts skeptically and compare against the airline’s own site.
Does AAA offer hotel discounts?
Yes, through partner chains that publish a AAA member rate, and through the AAA Discounts & Rewards portal. The saving varies by chain, property and season, so no fixed percentage is meaningful. Compare the member rate against the chain’s own lowest public rate at the time you book, because the two are not always in the member’s favor. On a single hotel stay the gap is usually smaller than the car-rental fee waivers.
Is the AAA Best Price Guarantee a refund?
No. AAA matches the lower rate on your existing booking and issues a $50 AAA Travel Certificate for a future trip. The certificate is limited to one per booking, expires a year from issue, cannot be used on online bookings, and requires the future booking to cost at least $500 excluding taxes and fees.
Do you need a AAA membership to get an International Driving Permit?
No. AAA issues International Driving Permits to non-members, and at AAA Hudson Valley the $20 fee is identical either way. AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance are the only two organizations the U.S. Department of State authorizes to issue them, so any other seller is offering a document that carries no standing.
What is AAA Vacations?
AAA Vacations is the branded package and cruise program sold through AAA’s preferred travel providers. Booking inside it is what triggers the Best Price Guarantee and the tier-scaled Travel Accident Insurance, both of which are unavailable if you assemble the same trip yourself. It is the product the free planning time is designed to sell.
Is a AAA membership worth it just for travel?
Only if you rent cars or book packages. A member aged 20 to 24 renting from Hertz for a week recovers more than double an entry-tier membership from the waived Young Renter Fee alone. A member who books flights and hotels online and never rents recovers almost nothing, and would be buying roadside assistance with a travel section attached. Price it against your own bookings, the same way you would set any reasonable vacation budget.

Last updated 29 August 2026. This revision replaced two unsourced “average member saving” percentages with the fee values Hertz publishes, corrected the widely repeated claim that free Hertz Gold Plus Rewards membership is a AAA exclusive (Hertz’s own comparison offers it to non-members too), added AAA Hudson Valley’s agency service fee schedule effective 1 May 2026, added The Auto Club Group’s tiered Travel Accident Insurance figures, and set out the Best Price Guarantee’s twenty-four-hour deadline, claim form and $500 future-booking condition. Fees, dues and coverage are set by each independent AAA club and change without notice; verify against your own club before booking.
