Best Time to Visit
Y'know what's cool about the Arboretum? It's stunning year-round, but each season brings its own special charm. Spring brings a riot of flowering trees and bulbs - the magnolias and crabapples are insane. Summer's all about those lush green canopies and perfect picnic weather. Fall? Oh man, the colors are out of this world - especially in October when the maples do their thing. And winter? That's when the Illumination show turns everything magical. But here's a pro tip: if you're coming for fall colors, try visiting on a weekday. Those weekend October crowds can get pretty intense.
How to Get There
Getting to Morton Arboretum is pretty straightforward. It's right off I-88 in Lisle, about 25 miles west of Chicago. If you're taking public transit, you can hop on the Metra BNSF line to Lisle station - though you'll need to grab a quick ride-share from there. Plenty of parking once you arrive, but heads up - it fills up fast during special events and peak fall weekends.
Tips for Visiting
Listen, I learned some of these the hard way, so let me save you some trouble. Definitely wear comfy walking shoes - those 1,700 acres aren't gonna explore themselves! Bring a water bottle and snacks, especially if you're planning to hit the trails. The café's great, but having your own supplies gives you more flexibility.
Download the Arboretum's app before you go - it's got interactive maps that'll keep you from getting turned around on the trails (been there!). If you're coming with kids, pack a change of clothes because that Children's Garden fountain is basically irresistible to little ones.
