Description
Standing proud as Liverpool’s second-tallest building, St Johns Beacon (also known as Radio City Tower) is honestly one of my favorite spots to get a bird’s eye view of this incredible city. At 138 meters tall, this striking structure gives you the kind of panoramic views that’ll make your jaw drop – and I’m not exaggerating!
As someone who’s visited multiple times, I can tell you there’s nothing quite like seeing Liverpool sprawl out beneath you through those floor-to-ceiling windows. On a clear day (and we do get those in Liverpool!), you can see across to North Wales, the Irish Sea, and even catch glimpses of Manchester’s skyline in the distance.
Key Features
• 360-degree observation gallery offering unobstructed views of Liverpool’s skyline
• Working radio station (Radio City) broadcasting live from the tower
• Modern viewing platform with interactive touchscreens that help identify landmarks
• Professional photographers available to capture your visit
• Climate-controlled environment making it comfortable year-round
• Informative displays about Liverpool’s history and architecture
• Fast elevators that zoom you to the top in under 30 seconds
Best Time to Visit
I’ve been here at different times of day, and let me tell ya – timing can make or break your experience. Sunset is absolutely magical, when the city gets bathed in golden light and the river Mersey sparkles like diamonds. But here’s a pro tip from someone who’s learned the hard way: try visiting first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds and get the clearest views before any haze sets in.
Winter months actually offer some of the most spectacular views, especially on crisp, clear days. Though summer gives you longer daylight hours, the warmer months tend to bring more tourists. Spring and autumn offer a nice balance of good weather and manageable crowd levels.
How to Get There
Getting to St Johns Beacon is super straightforward – it’s right in the heart of Liverpool’s shopping district. If you’re taking the train, Lime Street Station is just a 10-minute walk away. From Liverpool Central Station, you’re looking at about a 5-minute stroll.
Coming by bus? Several city routes stop practically at the tower’s doorstep. And if you’re driving, there’s plenty of parking available in the nearby St Johns Shopping Centre car park, though I usually prefer using the cheaper Mount Pleasant car park just a few blocks away.
Tips for Visiting
Look, I’ve been up this tower enough times to have learned a few things the hard way. First off, definitely book your tickets in advance during peak season – especially if you’re hoping to catch that golden hour light. The queues can get pretty wild during summer weekends.
Bring a camera with a decent zoom lens if you’ve got one – your phone camera will work fine, but you’ll kick yourself if you miss capturing those far-off details. And speaking of details, grab one of those free guide maps when you arrive – they’re actually super helpful for identifying landmarks.
Sometimes the windows can have a bit of glare, so wearing darker clothes can help reduce reflections in your photos. Oh, and don’t forget to check the weather forecast before booking – fog or heavy rain can really impact the views.
If you’re bringing kids (and you totally should – mine were mesmerized), try turning it into a game of landmark spotting. The staff are usually happy to help point out interesting buildings and share some fascinating stories about the city’s history.
Last tip? Take your time up there. I’ve seen too many folks rush through in 15 minutes, but there’s so much to see from each angle. Give yourself at least 45 minutes to really soak it all in. Trust me, when you spot a cruise ship slowly making its way down the Mersey or catch the sun glinting off the Anglican Cathedral’s tower, you’ll be glad you weren’t in a hurry.
And y’know what? Even as a local, I still discover something new every time I visit. Whether it’s spotting a building I never noticed before or learning a new bit of Liverpool trivia from the incredibly knowledgeable staff, each visit feels fresh and exciting. Just remember to dress warmly – it can get pretty chilly up there, even on sunny days!
