Description
Y’know, I’ve gotta tell ya about this absolutely stunning spot I discovered in Colombia – the Parador Fotográfico – La Chorrera. It’s this incredible viewpoint that’ll make any photographer’s heart skip a beat! Think jaw-dropping vistas of the majestic La Chorrera waterfall, which happens to be Colombia’s tallest waterfall at a whopping 590 meters (1,936 feet)!
As someone who’s always chasing the perfect shot, I can tell you this place is pure magic. The observation deck gives you this perfectly framed view of the waterfall cascading down the mountainside – it’s like nature designed it specifically for Instagram! But it’s so much more than just a photo op. The whole experience of being there, surrounded by the lush Andean forest and feeling the cool mist on your face, is something that’ll stick with you forever.

Best Time to Visit
From my experience, timing is everything when visiting the Parador Fotográfico! Early morning, like right after sunrise, is absolutely magical – that’s when you’ll catch the softest light and the least crowds. But here’s a pro tip: check the weather forecast before you go. The best photos happen on partly cloudy days when you get that perfect mix of sun and clouds.
The dry season (December to March) typically offers the clearest views, but don’t write off the rainy season entirely! Sometimes those moody, misty shots with clouds rolling through can be absolutely spectacular. I actually got some of my favorite shots during a light drizzle – just make sure to protect your camera equipment!
Weekdays are definitely less crowded than weekends. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll appreciate having the viewing platform to yourself for those perfect shots without other tourists in the frame.
How to Get There
Getting to the Parador Fotográfico is part of the adventure! First things first, you’ll want to make your way to the town of Choachí from Bogotá. The drive takes about an hour and a half, winding through some pretty spectacular mountain roads. Fair warning though – some of those curves can be pretty intense!
Once you reach Choachí, you’ll follow signs to La Chorrera. The last stretch involves a bit of a hike – about 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace. The trail is well-marked but can get muddy after rain (learned that one the hard way!). You’ll definitely want to wear proper hiking shoes and not those fancy sneakers I foolishly wore on my first visit!
Tips for Visiting
Look, I’ve made all the rookie mistakes so you don’t have to! Here’s what I’ve learned from my visits:
Bring a good camera – your phone will work, but if you’ve got a DSLR or mirrorless camera, this is the time to use it. The changing light conditions and distance to the waterfall really benefit from having some proper gear.
Pack light but smart. You’ll want:
– A rain jacket (even on sunny days – that waterfall mist is no joke!)
– Water and snacks (there aren’t any shops up there)
– Comfortable, grippy shoes
– Camera cleaning cloth (trust me on this one)
– Small backpack for your gear
Give yourself plenty of time – at least 2-3 hours to really enjoy the experience. The light changes throughout the day, and sometimes the best shots come when you least expect them.
Oh, and here’s something I wish someone had told me: bring cash for the entrance fee! They don’t take cards, and having to trek back down to find an ATM is NOT fun (yeah, I learned that one the hard way).
Remember to respect the environment – this is a protected area, and we want to keep it beautiful for future visitors. Stick to marked paths, pack out what you pack in, and maybe pick up any trash you see along the way.
And one last thing – don’t get so caught up in getting the perfect shot that you forget to actually enjoy the moment. Sometimes the best thing to do is just put the camera down and take in the incredible view with your own eyes. After all, some memories are better captured by heart than by lens!
