I’ve visited countless lakes across Eastern Europe, but this one’s crystal-clear waters and dramatic mountain backdrop left me speechless. The lake spans roughly 270 hectares, creating a mirror-like surface that perfectly reflects the surrounding Călimani Mountains.

The water takes on different personalities throughout the day – sometimes it’s a deep emerald, other times it shows off a striking turquoise hue that reminds me of Alpine lakes in Switzerland. Best Time to Visit

From my experience, late June through early September offers the most enjoyable conditions at Colibița. The water temperature becomes perfect for swimming, and the weather typically stays stable. But I gotta tell you – September is my personal sweet spot. The summer crowds thin out, accommodation prices drop, and the surrounding forests start showing hints of autumn colors.

If you’re into winter activities, December through February transforms the area into a snow-covered wonderland. The frozen lake surface creates an otherworldly landscape, though you’ll need to pack serious cold-weather gear.

How to Get There

Getting to Colibița takes some effort, but that’s part of what keeps it special. From Bistrița city, you’ll want to take the road toward Prundu Bârgăului, then follow the signs to Colibița. The drive takes about an hour and follows some pretty winding mountain roads – trust me, you’ll want to take it slow and enjoy the views along the way.

Public transportation is limited, but there are daily buses from Bistrița to Colibița during peak season. I’d strongly recommend renting a car though – it gives you the freedom to explore the surrounding areas at your own pace and stop at those amazing viewpoints you’ll definitely want to photograph.

Tips for Visiting

Look, I learned some of these the hard way, so let me save you some trouble. First off, book your accommodation well in advance during summer weekends – this place gets surprisingly busy despite its remote location. The guesthouses right by the lake offer the best views, but they’re usually the first to fill up.

Bring water shoes if you’re planning to swim – some areas of the shoreline can be rocky. And don’t forget your camera – the light during sunrise is absolutely magical here, especially when morning mist hovers over the lake’s surface.

Pack some snacks and water for hiking trips – while there are restaurants near the main tourist areas, the best viewpoints are often far from any facilities. Oh, and if you’re into fishing, make sure to get a permit from the local authorities first – learned that one through an awkward conversation with a ranger!

And here’s a local secret – the small chapel on the hill offers one of the best panoramic views of the entire lake. Just follow the marked trail behind the main beach area. It’s a bit of a climb, but those views are worth every step.
