Description
Standing proudly at 30 meters high on Okinawa’s rugged western coastline, Cape Zanpa Lighthouse is one of those hidden gems that’ll take your breath away. Trust me, I’ve visited quite a few lighthouses in my travels, but this one hits different. The brilliant white tower contrasts beautifully against the azure Okinawan sky, and y’know what? It’s actually one of the tallest lighthouses in the entire prefecture.

Best Time to Visit
Let me tell ya, timing is everything when visiting Cape Zanpa. I’d say the sweet spot is between October and April – that’s when the weather’s just perfect, not too hot or humid. Early mornings are fantastic if you wanna avoid the crowds, but honestly? Sunset is when the magic happens. The way the dying light catches the lighthouse and paints the sky… it’s something else.
During summer months (May through September), try to plan your visit either early morning or late afternoon to dodge that brutal Okinawan heat. And here’s a local secret – some of the most spectacular photos happen right after a typhoon passes, when the waves are still dramatic but the sky starts clearing up.
How to Get There
Getting to Cape Zanpa isn’t particularly complicated, but it does require a bit of planning. Your best bet is renting a car – that’s what I did, and it made the whole experience so much easier. From Naha, it’s about an hour’s drive along the coastal highway. The roads are well-maintained and clearly marked, even for us English speakers.
If you’re not keen on driving, there are buses that run from Naha Bus Terminal, but they’re not super frequent. You’ll want to grab the bus heading toward Yomitan Village and hop off at the Cape Zanpa stop. From there, it’s a short walk to the lighthouse. Just follow the signs – or better yet, follow the people with cameras!
Tips for Visiting
Alright, lemme share some insider tips that’ll make your visit extra special. First off, bring cash! The entrance fee to climb the lighthouse is minimal, but some of the local vendors (including that amazing ice cream truck) don’t accept cards.
Wear comfy shoes – you’ll be doing quite a bit of walking, and some of the paths can be uneven. Don’t forget your camera, obviously, but also pack some water and maybe a light jacket. Even in summer, it can get pretty breezy up top.
If you’re visiting with kids, plan to spend at least 2-3 hours here. The petting zoo is a huge hit with little ones, and they usually love climbing the lighthouse steps (all 99 of them – I counted!). Speaking of steps, they’re totally manageable, but if you have mobility issues, the ground-level views are still absolutely gorgeous.
Oh, and here’s something most guidebooks won’t tell you – the ice cream truck usually takes a break between 2:30 and 3:30 PM. Plan your sweet treats accordingly! And while the lighthouse is beautiful all day long, my personal favorite time is about an hour before sunset. The light gets all golden and warm, perfect for photos.
During peak season (especially Japanese holidays), try to arrive before 10 AM or after 3 PM to avoid the biggest crowds. And if you see dark clouds rolling in, don’t worry too much – some of my favorite memories here are of watching storms roll across the ocean from the safety of the observation deck.
Last but not least, take time to chat with the local staff – they’re super friendly and often have fascinating stories about the lighthouse and the surrounding area. Some even speak a bit of English, and they’re always happy to help you get the perfect photo spot!
