Bushy Park

Description

Look, I absolutely adore Bushy Park – it’s one of those magical London gems that actually feels like you’ve stumbled into the countryside. As someone who’s spent countless weekends wandering these grounds, I can tell you it’s way more than just another royal park. The deer here are the real stars of the show – both red and fallow deer roam freely across this massive 1,099-acre expanse, just like they’ve done since Henry VIII’s time. And honestly? There’s something pretty special about rounding a corner and coming face-to-face with these majestic creatures.

Key Features

• The Diana Fountain, a stunning bronze masterpiece that’s actually a statue of Arethusa (fun fact: most folks get that wrong!)
• The Woodland Gardens, bursting with azaleas and rhododendrons that’ll make your Instagram feed pop
• The Water Gardens, complete with cascading water features that’ll transport you back to the 17th century
• Upper Lodge Water Gardens, recently restored to their baroque glory
• The Pheasantry Welcome Centre, where you can grab a proper cuppa and some cake
• Miles of tree-lined paths perfect for cycling or walking
• The Waterhouse Woodland Garden, particularly gorgeous during spring
• Historic military buildings and monuments scattered throughout
• A proper playground that’ll keep the little ones entertained for hours

Best Time to Visit

Honestly, each season brings its own magic to Bushy Park, but I’d say autumn is particularly special. That’s when the deer rutting season kicks off (usually October), and watching these magnificent creatures go about their ancient ritual is something else. Spring’s pretty spectacular too, with daffodils carpeting the grounds and baby deer wobbling about. Summer weekends are perfect for picnics, but try to arrive early – it can get busy when the sun’s out. Winter has its own charm, especially on those crisp, frosty mornings when the whole park looks like it’s been dusted with sugar.

How to Get There

Getting to Bushy Park’s actually pretty straightforward. Hampton Court and Hampton Wick stations are your closest rail options – both about a 10-15 minute walk away. If you’re coming by bus, the 111, 216, 411, and R68 all stop nearby. And yep, there’s parking available if you’re driving, with several car parks dotted around the perimeter. My personal favorite is the one near the Pheasantry – it’s usually less crowded and puts you right by the cafe.

Tips for Visiting

Right, here’s what I’ve learned from countless visits: First off, keep your distance from the deer. They might look friendly, but they’re wild animals and can be pretty unpredictable, especially during rutting season. Bring a decent pair of walking shoes – the park’s massive and you’ll want to explore properly. If you’re bringing your four-legged friend, keep them on a lead around the deer. Oh, and download the park map before you go – trust me, it comes in handy when you’re trying to find specific spots.

Pack a picnic if you can – there are loads of perfect spots under the ancient trees. Early mornings are magical here – that’s when you’ll catch the best wildlife activity and avoid the crowds. Don’t forget your camera – the light through the ancient woodlands is something special, especially during golden hour. And speaking from experience, bring layers! The weather can be pretty changeable, and there’s not much shelter once you’re out in the open areas.

If you’re visiting with kids, make sure to stop by the playground near the Pheasantry. And while the cafe there is lovely, it can get pretty packed on weekends – maybe pack some snacks just in case. During summer, the early evening is actually my favorite time to visit – the light’s gorgeous, the crowds have thinned out, and the deer are often more active.

Remember that the gates close at different times throughout the year depending on daylight hours, so double-check the closing time before you visit. And here’s a little secret – the Woodland Gardens are at their absolute best in late April when the azaleas are in full bloom. Just don’t tell everyone about that one!
