DreamWorks Water Park
Description
DreamWorks Water Park, nestled inside the sprawling American Dream complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is a breath of fresh air — or should I say a splash of water — for anyone craving aquatic adventure right in the heart of the Tri-State area. As the continent’s largest indoor water park, DreamWorks Water Park is hard to miss: just a few steps from retail giants and attractions under one giant skylit roof, this attraction boasts the kind of over-the-top features most kids (and let’s be real, adults too) dream about.
Imagine tubing down a lazy river as the soundtrack from your favorite DreamWorks movies plays in the background. Or catching actual surf on the world’s biggest indoor wave pool — I’m talking three-foot waves, perfect for bobbing or showing off surfing skills.
The park is themed to perfection. Your favorite DreamWorks characters, from Shrek to the Penguins of Madagascar, pop up where you least expect them: soaring overhead, grinning inside the raft rides, or even surprising you on a sticker among the lockers. There’s a certain joy in seeing these friendly faces come alive across the vibrant and colorful décor.
I find that what truly sets this place apart, though, is how it manages to keep all ages and energy levels entertained throughout the day. There are mat racer slides for thrill-seekers, shallow splash zones for little ones, and plenty of chill zones if you just want to float along and people-watch. Even toddlers are thoughtfully catered to, making DreamWorks Water Park a family-friendly (and weatherproof!) escape just minutes from Manhattan.

Best Time to Visit
Because DreamWorks Water Park is fully indoors and climate-controlled, you can plan your trip any time of year — rainy days, snowy weekends, or even during harsh summer heat waves. I personally prefer weekdays outside of school holidays when crowds thin out, and the lines for the slides are (mercifully) short.
If you’re visiting during a public holiday, winter break, or summer weekends, be prepared for a bit of a wait — both getting in and for the most popular rides. The park usually opens in the late morning and closes by night, but check the official calendar as opening times occasionally shift for events or private parties.
For those after deals, keep an eye out for discounted admission during late afternoon sessions. And if you’re active military or a veteran, bring your ID — the park honors military discounts at the gate.
How to Get There
DreamWorks Water Park’s location at 1 American Dream Wy, East Rutherford, couldn’t be easier to access no matter where you’re coming from in the NYC metro area. If traveling by car, American Dream offers multiple paid parking lots and a covered garage — I recommend using the parking garage, especially in bad weather.
For public transportation, you have several choices. From Manhattan, direct buses run from Port Authority to American Dream, dropping you practically at the entrance. NJ Transit offers select trains to the Meadowlands station, with shuttles running to the mall. If you’re arriving by ride-share, there are well-marked drop-off points right outside the water park entrance.
ADA-accessible parking and drop-off areas are located close to the main door, and wheelchairs (both manual and electric) are available to borrow through Guest Services.
Tips for Visiting
- Book Ahead: Admission often sells out days in advance, so I highly recommend reserving your tickets online before making the trip.
- Arrive Early: Even with pre-booked tickets, arrive as soon as the park opens to snag a good spot near the wave pool or your chosen slide tower.
- What to Pack: Water shoes are encouraged (the floors can get slippery and are a bit cool for bare feet). Bring flip-flops for walking between attractions, though you’ll be asked to leave them on the side of slides.
- Locker Rental: There’s no shortage of digital lockers of various sizes — bring a waterproof phone case if you plan on taking photos inside, but consider storing valuables.
- Toweling Off: Towels are available for rent, but I find it more convenient (and comfortable) to bring my own fluffy beach towel from home.
- Height & Ride Restrictions: Each major slide has posted height requirements; make sure to measure up little ones before getting their hopes set on the major rides.
- Food and Drink: Outside food and drinks aren’t permitted inside the park, but the onsite eateries are decent — the tacos and fruit smoothies are a surprising highlight. If you have allergies, notify staff: they’re attentive about accommodations.
- Queue Times: Typically, the wave pool and lazy river have the least wait. Hit the biggest slides first, and check the screens by each ride for current wait times throughout the day.
- Photo Ops: Keep your phone or a waterproof camera handy; there are character meet-and-greets with Shrek, King Julian, and others throughout the day for some memorable snaps.
- Plan for Rest: It’s easy to overdo it! Take advantage of the lounge chairs and shaded areas. If your group needs quiet time or younger kids need a nap, consider renting a private cabana for the day.
DreamWorks Water Park is more than just a collection of slides — it’s a one-of-a-kind spot for families, groups of friends, or anyone who wants to be a kid again for a day. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, escaping the weather, or just in search of some indoor fun near New York City, I think you’ll come away with more than just soggy hair: you’ll leave refreshed, smiling, and probably already planning your next visit.
