Weh Island, more commonly referred to as We Island in Sabang City, Indonesia, is one of those places that quietly captivates visitors without ever really trying too hard. Diving and snorkeling are what usually draw people here. The waters around the island are famously clear, and many divers say this is among the best diving in all of Southeast Asia. Whether it’s exploring the underwater canyons of Rubiah Island or drifting over vibrant coral gardens, the sense of being in a different world is undeniable. Yet it’s not all about diving. Many visitors also enjoy exploring the interior on mopeds, winding through green hills and discovering hidden coves and small bays dotted along the coast. The island isn’t large, but it’s big enough that you can spend several days uncovering new corners without feeling like you’re retracing your steps.

For some, the highlight is cultural rather than natural. Sabang City is small by comparison to other Indonesian cities, yet it carries a pride in being part of Aceh Province, with its distinct customs, foods, and traditions. The local people are known for their warmth. Conversations over coffee, laughter shared on ferry rides, and unexpected invitations to taste traditional Acehnese dishes leave impressions just as strong as the scenery. This blend of unspoiled landscapes with down-to-earth hospitality makes We Island stand out.

Of course, like any destination, experiences differ. Some visitors may find the infrastructure a little underdeveloped, with limited nightlife and occasional struggles to get things done easily. However, the majority walk away recalling breathtaking sunsets over the Andaman Sea, lazy mornings by the coast, and the unique feeling of being far away from the chaos of busier parts of Indonesia. It’s not a place that screams luxury, but rather whispers authenticity, which is becoming rarer to find in today’s travel world.
