Best Time to Visit

Look, I’ve been here during different seasons, and I gotta tell you – the best time to visit Waqanki Lodge is between April and October. These months offer the most stable weather conditions, and the orchids are typically in full bloom. The mornings are particularly spectacular, with mist rolling through the canopy and birds at their most active.

But here’s a little insider tip: if you’re specifically coming for the hummingbirds, plan your visit between June and August. That’s when the greatest variety of species frequent the feeders. The early morning hours, around 6-8 AM, and late afternoon, 3-5 PM, are prime times for wildlife observation.

How to Get There

Getting to Waqanki Lodge is part of the adventure! From Lima, you’ll need to catch a flight to Tarapoto airport. Once there, it’s about a 45-minute drive to Moyobamba, where the lodge is located. Ya know what’s funny? The first time I made this journey, I actually got a bit lost – but nowadays the route is well-marked and much easier to navigate.

Most visitors arrange transportation through the lodge itself (which I totally recommend), but you can also grab a taxi from Moyobamba. If you’re feeling adventurous, local colectivos (shared vans) run regularly from Tarapoto to Moyobamba, though you’ll need to arrange the final leg to the lodge separately.

Tips for Visiting

After several visits to Waqanki, I’ve learned a thing or two about making the most of your stay. First off, pack those rubber boots! The trails can get pretty muddy, especially after rain. And speaking of rain – always carry a light raincoat, even during the dry season. The weather here can change faster than a hummingbird’s wingbeat!

Bring your camera equipment, obviously, but don’t forget spare batteries and memory cards. The photo opportunities here are endless, and you don’t wanna miss out because your battery died (been there, done that!). If you’re into bird photography, a flash unit can be super helpful for those early morning shots.

Book at least three nights if you can – trust me on this one. It takes time to really appreciate the rhythm of the forest and spot all the different species. And don’t skip the night walks! Some of the most fascinating creatures come out after dark. Plus, the guides here know their stuff – they can spot things you’d walk right past.

Oh, and one last thing – the wifi here can be a bit spotty (it is the rainforest, after all). But honestly? That’s part of the charm. Use it as an excuse to disconnect and immerse yourself in the incredible natural surroundings. Some of my best memories here are from evenings spent on the observation deck, watching the sunset with nothing but the sounds of the forest for company.
