I’ve spent countless summers exploring this stunning coastal city, and let me tell you, it never gets old! The city stretches along the Turkish Riviera, where the emerald waters of the Mediterranean kiss the dramatic Taurus Mountains.

Y’know what makes Antalya really special? It’s this incredible mix of ancient Roman harbors, Ottoman-era neighborhoods, and swanky modern districts. The old town, Kaleiçi, is like stepping into a time machine – all narrow cobblestone streets and traditional Turkish houses with those charming overhanging balconies. But then you’ve got places like Lara Beach, where luxury resorts stretch as far as the eye can see.

Best Time to Visit

Speaking from experience, April to May and September to October are absolute sweet spots for visiting Antalya. The weather’s just perfect – warm enough for swimming but not scorching hot like in peak summer. Plus, you’ll dodge those crazy summer crowds and sky-high prices.

Summer (June-August) gets pretty intense with temperatures often hitting 35°C (95°F). Sure, it’s great for beach time, but sightseeing can be pretty exhausting. Trust me, I learned this the hard way during my first visit in July! Winter’s surprisingly mild, usually around 15°C (59°F), making it ideal for exploring historical sites and hiking, though some beach clubs and water activities might be closed.

How to Get There

Getting to Antalya is super straightforward. The city’s international airport handles tons of direct flights from major European cities, especially during summer. From the airport, you’ve got several options to reach the city center, about 13km away.

The most convenient way is grabbing a taxi – there’s a stand right outside the terminal. But here’s a money-saving tip: the public bus (Havaş) runs every 30 minutes and costs way less. If you’re coming from elsewhere in Turkey, the intercity bus network is fantastic – comfortable coaches connect Antalya to Istanbul (around 12 hours), Ankara (8 hours), and other major cities.

Tips for Visiting

Listen up, because these tips come from both personal experience and local insights! First off, get yourself an AntalyaKart – it’s this rechargeable card for public transport that’ll save you loads of hassle and money. You can buy it at most transport hubs.

Bargaining is totally expected in the bazaars, but don’t go overboard – start at about 60% of the initial price and work your way up. And speaking of shopping, the best authentic souvenirs are in the old town, not the modern malls.

For beach time, I’d recommend packing water shoes – some of the beaches are pebbly rather than sandy. Oh, and don’t miss the local food scene! Skip the tourist traps along the marina and head to the side streets where the locals eat. The pide (Turkish pizza) places around Işıklar Street are absolutely amazing.

If you’re visiting in summer, plan your outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon – the midday sun can be brutal. And make sure to carry water everywhere – the Mediterranean heat is no joke!

Lastly, learning a few basic Turkish phrases goes a long way. Even just “merhaba” (hello) and “teşekkür ederim” (thank you) will earn you smiles and maybe even some local recommendations that aren’t in any guidebook. And believe me, those are often the best experiences!
