Summer brings warm breezes and blooming wildflowers, while winter offers solitude and occasional sightings of snow buntings and other cold-weather visitors.

How to Get There

The sanctuary sits at the mouth of the Housatonic River, easily accessible from major Connecticut highways. From I-95, take the Stratford exit and follow local roads toward the coast. The property features a designated parking area that accommodates several vehicles. Y’know what’s great? The parking is free, which is always a nice bonus when you’re planning a day out in nature.

Tips for Visiting

Pack binoculars – you’ll kick yourself if you forget them! The bird watching here is fantastic, and you’ll want a good look at the shorebirds and raptors that frequent the area. Bring water and snacks since there aren’t any vendors on site. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress in layers – the coastal breeze can be pretty fierce sometimes, even on sunny days.

The facility is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM, and you’ll definitely want to arrive with enough time to explore. Keep in mind that all vehicles must exit by closing time. Consider bringing a camera – the sunsets here are absolutely gorgeous, and you might catch some amazing wildlife shots too.

I’d recommend checking the weather forecast before heading out since much of the property is exposed to the elements. Bug spray can be handy during summer months, and sunscreen is a must year-round since there’s limited shade along the trails.
