Place Bellecour

Description

Place Bellecour stands as the beating heart of Lyon, France – and boy, what a heart it is! This massive square (the third largest in France, if you’re keeping score) has been the city’s main gathering spot since the 17th century. I remember my first time stepping onto its distinctive reddish gravel – the sheer size of it literally stopped me in my tracks. It’s like standing in an enormous outdoor living room where all of Lyon comes to hang out.

The square’s most striking feature is the majestic equestrian statue of Louis XIV right in the center. Trust me, you can’t miss it – that horse has been watching over the plaza since 1825! And speaking of watching over things, there’s also this cool statue of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry with his beloved Little Prince character. As a lifelong fan of The Little Prince, finding this gem made my day.

Key Features

• The grand equestrian statue of Louis XIV dominates the center
• Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Little Prince sculptures
• Seasonal attractions including a summer Ferris wheel and winter ice skating rink
• Beautiful flower market stalls adding splashes of color year-round
• The Tourist Office of Lyon (super helpful for first-time visitors!)
• Small but fascinating art museum
• Historic buildings framing the square on all sides
• Red gravel surface that gives the square its unique character
• Plenty of benches for people-watching
• Regular cultural events and festivals throughout the year

Best Time to Visit

Honestly? Place Bellecour shows different faces throughout the year, and they’re all pretty spectacular. Summer evenings are magical – the square comes alive with locals and tourists enjoying the warm air, and the Ferris wheel offers amazing city views. I’d say between June and September is perfect for making the most of outdoor cafes and events.

Winter has its own charm, especially during December when the Christmas market and ice rink transform the square into a festive wonderland. Spring brings the flower vendors out in full force, and fall offers comfortable temperatures for exploring with smaller crowds.

Pro tip: Early morning visits let you experience the square’s peaceful side before the crowds arrive. And if you’re into photography, the golden hour just before sunset creates stunning lighting conditions with the statues.

How to Get There

Getting to Place Bellecour is a breeze – it’s basically impossible to miss! The easiest way is by metro – just hop off at the Bellecour station where lines A and D intersect. I actually got lost my first time trying to find it (classic me), only to realize I was standing right on top of it when I emerged from the metro station!

If you’re already exploring Lyon on foot, the square is right in the middle of the peninsula between the Rhône and Saône rivers. Pretty much all major walking routes through the city center pass through or near it. And yeah, there are plenty of buses that stop nearby too.

Tips for Visiting

Okay, let me share some hard-learned wisdom from my visits. First off, bring your camera – the square offers some killer photo ops, especially with the statue of Louis XIV against the backdrop of Fourvière Basilica. But don’t just snap and go – take time to soak in the atmosphere.

The Tourist Office in the square is a goldmine of information. Pop in there first – they’ve got maps, guides, and insider tips that’ll make your Lyon adventure way better. And their staff actually knows their stuff!

If you’re visiting in summer, bring water and maybe a hat – there’s not tons of shade in the middle of the square. The trees around the edges are your friends on hot days. In winter, the ice rink is super fun, but book your slot in advance during weekends – it gets packed!

Food-wise, skip the tourist traps right on the square. Walk just a couple blocks into the surrounding streets for more authentic (and better value) Lyon cuisine. That’s where you’ll find the real gems.

Oh, and keep your eyes peeled for special events – the square hosts everything from food festivals to outdoor concerts throughout the year. Sometimes you’ll stumble upon the most amazing local celebrations totally by accident. That’s actually how I discovered my favorite Lyon wine festival last year!

Lastly, don’t rush it. Place Bellecour is more than just a square – it’s where you can really feel Lyon’s pulse. Grab a bench, watch the world go by, and maybe strike up a conversation with a local. Some of my best travel memories have come from doing exactly that right here in this magnificent square.
