Description

Operated by the Pacific Locomotive Association, the railway highlights the role this very stretch of track played in the first transcontinental railroad. It’s not hard to imagine how significant this line once was for connecting the San Francisco Bay Area to the rest of California and beyond. Today, the preserved trains evoke a past where travel meant polished wooden interiors, the smell of engine steam or diesel on the breeze, and slow, steady motion through rugged hillsides along Alameda Creek.

Because it is run almost entirely by dedicated volunteers, there’s a sense of pride that radiates from the staff. Conversations with conductors or docents often spin into vivid storytelling about the Southern Pacific Railroad, the Western Pacific line, and the countless workers who once kept trains moving through these very hills. Whether you’re a seasoned rail enthusiast or just curious about a unique day trip, this museum manages to strike a balance between being family-friendly and historically deep, with plenty of detail for those who love engineering, industry, or old California history.

Most people walk away charmed by the experience. The ride itself passes rolling green hills in spring, golden grass in summer, and dramatic oak woodlands all year long. Still, because historic trains aren’t always the smoothest or fastest, it’s wise to arrive with the idea that this is about soaking in charm, nostalgia, and scenery, not racing to the next attraction. That slower pace feels refreshing once you lean into it—you end up realizing that the simple rhythm of wheels against track is worth the trip itself.
