Description
The Expo Feria Tizimín is one of Yucatan’s most anticipated annual events, transforming this charming colonial city into a bustling celebration of local culture, agriculture, and entertainment. Y’know what makes this fair special? It’s not just another tourist trap – it’s where tradition meets modern fun in the most authentic way possible. Having been there myself last year, I can tell you it’s an absolute feast for the senses!
The fair showcases the region’s finest livestock exhibitions (Tizimín is actually known as Mexico’s cattle capital!), traditional food vendors serving up mouthwatering Yucatecan delicacies, and endless entertainment options. I still dream about those papadzules I had from one of the food stalls – seriously life-changing stuff.

Best Time to Visit
The Expo Feria typically runs from late December through early January, with the main festivities happening around January 6th (Three Kings Day). But lemme tell you a secret – the best time to visit is during the first week when everything’s fresh and the energy is at its peak. The weather’s usually perfect this time of year too, with temps hovering around 75°F (24°C).
I’d recommend going in the late afternoon, around 4 PM, when the worst of the heat has passed. That way, you can experience both the daytime activities and the magical nighttime atmosphere when all the lights come on and the fair really comes alive.
How to Get There
Getting to the Expo Feria is pretty straightforward. From Merida, you can catch a first-class ADO bus that’ll get you to Tizimín in about 2.5 hours. If you’re driving (which I totally recommend for flexibility), take Highway 180 east towards Valladolid, then follow the signs to Tizimín. Once you’re in town, just follow the crowd – you literally can’t miss it!
Taxis and colectivos are readily available from the Tizimín bus station to the fairgrounds. And trust me on this one – even though parking near the fair can be a bit chaotic, it’s manageable if you arrive early enough.
Tips for Visiting
Ok, so here’s the real deal – stuff I wish someone had told me before my first visit. Bring cash! While some vendors might accept cards, cash is king here. And speaking of money, break those big bills before you arrive – small vendors often struggle with change.
Wear comfy shoes, people! You’ll be doing tons of walking, and the terrain can be uneven. I learned this the hard way when I showed up in my fancy boots last year – big mistake!
Try to pace yourself with the food (I know, it’s hard!). There’s so much amazing stuff to try, but you’ll want to save room for multiple tastings throughout your visit. The marquesitas near the main entrance are incredible, but save them for dessert.
If you’re bringing kids, consider visiting during the day when it’s less crowded. The evening shows are amazing, but they can get pretty packed. And don’t forget to check out the livestock exhibitions early in the morning – that’s when the animals are most active and the handlers are doing their thing.
For photography enthusiasts like myself, golden hour just before sunset creates magical lighting for capturing the fair’s atmosphere. And make sure to catch at least one of the traditional dance performances – they usually happen near the main stage around 7 PM.
Lastly, bring a light jacket for the evening – it can get surprisingly chilly once the sun sets. And remember, bargaining is totally acceptable at the artisan market, but always do it respectfully. These folks are sharing their culture and traditions with us, after all!
