## Baño Grande Historic Site, El Yunque (Río Grande, Puerto Rico)
Baño Grande is one of El Yunque’s most photogenic historic spots: a 1930s, stone-masonry pool, arched footbridge, and cobblestone walk set in the cloud-forest of the Palo Colorado zone along PR-191. It’s no longer for swimming, but it’s an easy, worthwhile stop for architecture, history, and rainforest scenery. Forest Service

## Why Baño Grande matters
From 1935–1938, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built Baño Grande as part of a New Deal recreation complex. The design team included Forest Service engineers R. E. Pidgeon (bridge) and H. Randolph (bathhouse), using reinforced concrete and stone masonry that blend into the rainforest setting. The pool is about 18 feet deep, fed by an unnamed creek in the La Mina River watershed. In continuous public use until 1968, it’s now preserved as a historic landscape and listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places (2017, Ref# 100000685).
> Information gain: Baño Grande is the larger of El Yunque’s two CCC-era pools—roughly three times the size of nearby Baño de Oro—and it anchors a cluster of 1930s CCC works in this corridor (shelters, trails, bridges).

## What you’ll see on site
– Arched stone bridge & cobblestone path. Classic CCC craftsmanship, excellent for photos after rain when mosses pop. Digital
– Emergent cloud-forest vegetation. This is the Mature Palo Colorado montane cloud wet forest zone—cooler, windier, and often misty; expect quick weather shifts. Forest Service
– Historic bathhouse footprint. The International-style bathhouse (not an active facility) is part of the NRHP listing; do not enter any closed/ruined structures. Digital

## Planning your visit (2025 realities)
Access & parking
– Drive PR-191 (North Corridor) from Río Grande. Look for km 11.9—Baño Grande sits across from Palo Colorado. Use the developed parking by Palo Colorado and walk across carefully; shoulder space along PR-191 is limited. Forest Service
– The Forest Service manages temporary traffic closures when lots fill; arrive early on weekends/holidays. Forest Service
On-site amenities
– No restrooms or water at Baño Grande; plan a stop at El Portal Visitor Center (lower on PR-191) for exhibits, restrooms, and café before heading up. Forest Service
– Paths are stone/cobblestone and can be slick after showers. Good tread shoes are essential.
Rules & safety
– No swimming or wading—closed since 1968 for safety reasons. Enjoy the overlook and paths only. Digital
– Expect rapid weather changes and low visibility; carry a light rain layer and protect cameras/phones. Forest Service

## Pair it with these short stops (same corridor)
– Baño de Oro (viewpoint) – Another 1930s CCC pool, visible from a short spur near km ~12.2 (trail may be closed; pool can usually be viewed). Interesting contrast in design/setting versus Baño Grande. Forest Service
– Mt. Britton Trail & Tower – Continue up to PR-9938 loop road for the trailhead; on clear days the 360° views are outstanding. Yunque Website

## Responsible photography & inclusivity tips
– Stay on hardened surfaces. The site sits on the La Mina watershed—erosion here ultimately affects streams and coquí frog habitat. Forest Service
– Mobility considerations: Surfaces are uneven and may involve steps; those with limited mobility may prefer viewing from the roadside vantage.
– Heat & precipitation: Cloud-forest can still be humid; bring water and a light shell even if the coast looks sunny.

## Brief history timeline

– 1968: Swimming ends due to safety concerns; site maintained as a scenic/historic asset. Digital
