## Achtersikkel, Ghent: Medieval courtyard, living music corner

The Achtersikkel is one of Ghent’s easiest wins: a tiny late-medieval courtyard a few steps from Sint-Baafsplein that still hums with music thanks to the adjacent conservatory. Step off busy Hoogpoort or Biezekapelstraat and you’re suddenly among brick and sandstone towers, a deep historic well, and carefully restored arcades—evidence of patrician wealth, guild-era turbulence, and 20th-century heritage care. ### Why it matters
– Authentic medieval fabric. Buildings around the courtyard date to the 14th–16th centuries, including a brick corner tower and a round limestone tower capped with an octagonal belvedere (a Renaissance-style “lookout”).
– Living music heritage. The site evolved into Ghent’s music academy/conservatory complex in the 1900–1908 restorations under city architect Charles van Rysselberghe, so you may hear students rehearsing as you pass.
– Protected monument. Both Grote Sikkel (fronting Hoogpoort) and Achtersikkel (toward Biezekapelstraat) have been protected since 2 September 1943; the ensemble remains listed as established architectural heritage (last reaffirmed 20 June 2023).

## A quick primer: what you’re looking at

Name & owners. “Achtersikkel” (“rear Sikkel”) takes its name from the Van der Sickele family, influential patricians who owned the block. In 1531 inheritance split the complex into Grote Sikkel (Hoogpoort) and Achtersikkel (Biezekapelstraat).

Towers & well.
– The brick corner turret is among the oldest elements (first half of the 14th c.).
– The round limestone tower (15th c.) was heightened in the later 16th c. with an octagonal Renaissance upper level; the octagon is a signature silhouette here.
– A deep private well in the court signals the wealth needed to secure water on-site—an uncommon luxury historically.

Arcades & chapel. Look for the upper-storey chapel supported by a slim arcade and the Tudor-style arches along the L-shaped wing; these details were stabilized and, where warranted, reconstructed during the conservatory conversion.

Urban furniture upgrade. In a recent public-realm refresh, custom meandering bench edges/steps with integrated LED lighting were added to suit the levels and sightlines of the small square—subtle at dusk and respectful of the historic masonry.
