Let me tell you about one of Vizag’s most fascinating geological wonders – the Yerra Mattidibbalu Dibbalu View. These stunning red sand dunes have been around for millions of years, and I was absolutely blown away when I first saw them! The name literally means “red sand hills” in Telugu, and boy, do they live up to that name!

Best Time to Visit

From my experience, the ideal time to explore these magnificent dunes is during the winter months, from November to February. The weather’s much more pleasant then, with temperatures hovering around 20-25°C (68-77°F). Trust me, you’ll appreciate the cooler weather when you’re walking around the dunes!

Early mornings or late afternoons are particularly magical – that’s when the sun hits the sand just right, creating this incredible golden-red glow. I’d suggest avoiding the summer months (March to June) because it can get brutally hot, and walking on the sand under the midday sun isn’t exactly a walk in the park.

How to Get There

Getting to Yerra Mattidibbalu is pretty straightforward. From Visakhapatnam city center, you can take a local bus or hire a taxi – it’s about a 45-minute drive. If you’re driving yourself (which I personally recommend for the flexibility), follow the Beach Road towards Bheemunipatnam. The dunes are clearly visible from the main road, and there’s decent signage to guide you.

Public transport is available but can be a bit tricky. Auto-rickshaws are another option, but make sure to negotiate the fare beforehand. And yeah, I learned this the hard way – it’s best to arrange your return journey in advance if you’re not driving yourself.

Tips for Visiting

Look, I’ve been here several times, and I’ve picked up a few tricks that’ll make your visit way better. First off, wear comfortable shoes – and I mean really comfortable ones. The sand can get pretty hot, and you’ll be doing quite a bit of walking.

Bring plenty of water – there aren’t many facilities around, and trust me, you’ll need to stay hydrated. A hat and sunscreen are absolute must-haves, even on cloudy days. The sun reflects off the sand and can be pretty intense.

If you’re into photography (and you should be, because this place is incredibly photogenic), the golden hours – just after sunrise or before sunset – offer the most stunning lighting conditions. I got some of my best shots during these times.

One thing most people don’t realize is that the terrain can be quite challenging in some spots. Take it slow, especially if you’re visiting with kids. Speaking of which, kids absolutely love running up and down the dunes, but keep an eye on them and set some boundaries.

Try to carry some snacks with you, as there aren’t many food options nearby. And please, this is super important – don’t litter. These dunes are a unique geological formation, and we need to preserve them for future generations.

Oh, and a little insider tip – visit on a weekday if possible. The weekends can get pretty crowded, especially during the tourist season. The peaceful atmosphere of the dunes is best experienced when there are fewer people around.
